What are the req courses? Is it possible to double major in 4 years taking 32 courses?

There are quite a lot of required courses. Rather, there are courses in lots of different areas that you must sample.

For instance, if you look at this link:
[Course Descriptions | University of Pittsburgh](http://www.courses.as.pitt.edu/)
and go over to the right, you will see the “Courses Recently Approved to Meet Requirements.” That link will give you more info. (Hey, isn’t it amazing that Pitt offers Icelandic, up to level 4?) Then, under that there is a drop-down menu of the requirements. Choose a category, then click on 2121 to see what’s offered for the fall semester. That will give you an overview of the courses you can take to fulfill the requirements. (When you get to the list of courses, make sure you click “List All” on the far right.)

As far as double majoring, it depends on what the two majors are. Sometimes courses can be applied to both a major and to the gen ed requirements, but not always. For instance, my daughter felt that double-majoring in an Asian language (which was 55 credits) and psychology would leave her with few electives. So she decided against it, and did the Asian Studies certificate instead.

My daughter found the advising at Pitt to be excellent. Your adviser will help you figure out how to knock off the requirements. That’s a big part of their job. You’ll have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of courses, so you won’t have any trouble finding stuff to interest you.

LurkNess is right. However, Pitt is also fairly generous with AP credit and if you did well on a few tests, they can fill some of your general education requirements.

Like LurkNess’s daughter, my daughter has just about decided against the double major with the Asian language. She will have a major, a minor, and an Asian studies certificate if her current plan plays out.

Just to let you hear another side…I think it depends on what you are thinking of as your majors. My D entered Pitt with a little over one semester in HS AP’s. She will complete in 4 years a double major in History and PS…a minor in German and a certificate in Gender Studies. There can be a lot of overlapping in required courses.

Physics/Applied Math and Japanese= no overlap.
