So I was viewing the general education requirements of Pitt for the college of arts and sciences and there appear to be quite a lot of them! (General Education Requirements). Is this normal for a college? I was planning to study abroad for a year and possibly double major (which I did know would be nearly impossible to do in four years) but with all those required classes it seems just plain impossible.

Yes, there are a lot of gen ed requirements at Pitt, but there’s a wide variety of courses you can choose from. It is hard to double-major at Pitt unless there’s a high degree of overlap.

Pitt is also fairly generous with AP credit, which may help you if you are double or dual majoring.
