Has anyone of your kids done research with a professor for a semester or more? How did they like it? When did they begin doing research? Were they given a stripend of any kind? What did they research?

Also, I am looking at summer internships in the south (georgia, florida, etc) for biology... any clue as to some good programs? I found Ga Tech...

Yes, my son is an freshman undergraduate research assistant at the University of Delaware's Center for Composite Materials. This is a paid position.

My D is a sophomore chemistry major at Villanova and is a research assistant this semester. She is not getting paid but does get 6 credits and will most likely be getting an A. It is a great cum booster. Because of this experience she has gotten a very well paying internship this summer for a large pharmecutical company.

My son worked as a research assistant for an English professor at Oberlin last summer. His job entailed doing research for and proofreading of a book the professor was writing. He was also asked to do research and curriculum development for a new class the professor would be teaching the next semester. This was a paid position.

He was in his first year at Oberlin but third year of college.

My D was a research asst after she finished her UG degree; she was exploring to see if she would want to pursue grad school. Her work with that prof resulted in being published, presenting at conferences, encouragement to apply to grad school, and she did and is loving her work. So, it is a great chance to determine whether you have an interest in a particular aspect of a field of study
