Hi, I have a few questions regarding medical research experience for BS/MD programs. I have secured a position for this summer and was just wondering if the experience itself will be helpful for my application or if I need to win something with the work (i.e. Siemens, Intel, etc).

Also, what is the impact of a publication if one is listed as a co-author?

Just having research is good enough for most of the BS/MD programs; you won’t need to worry about winning a Siemens or and Intel (Intel would actually be too late as candidates for interviews would already be selected or in the process of selection). Go for it, but it won’t add much when they’re mainly looking for the fact that you’ve done research. Same goes for co-publishing. It’s an opportunity to pursue if you can, but don’t worry at all about not having co-published. Probably these things would be more helpful if you were aiming for the most selective programs or normal undergraduate institutions, as they help distinguish you, but not for most bs/mds.
