Hey everybody,

I will begin work at a research lab this month, and I wanted to ask about lab etiquette. Aside from the obvious, how should I conduct myself in the lab. Also, is there a best uniform for lab work? Thanks!

All depends on the lab.

Try to observe which apparatus/equipment is community, and which belong to other individual researchers. I have worked in 2 bio research labs and in 1, everyone had their own set of pipets and pipet tips collection (in the other lab, it was all community). Once you learn which apparatus “belong” to individuals, of course do not use them without asking the individual first!

Fridge/freezer etiquette (and I’m not talking about foodstuff here): Do not move around other people’s stuff. Find space for your own stuff that does not obstruct other’s stuff. Naturally, don’t take stuff from a box labelled “John” if your name isn’t “John” :)

Thanks guys! Also, would t shirt and jeans suffice?
