Research @ Local University.

Has anyone been a research-assistant at a university near where you live? I know all colleges will be different, but in general how did you go about signing up and what did you do as a research-assistant?

I did independent research and was a research assistant. Go on the website of the local university, find someone doing something cool, read one of their papers, and write them a letter asking if you can help in their lab/do an independent project with their help/ whatever.

E-mail me for more info, if you want...good luck!

My D has done science research in nanoscale biosynthesis at Notre Dame this entire school year. Her responsibilities have increased over the year from scanning samples on an AFM to building her own structures with DNA. Your best bet is to find out find out what type of research is being done at your local university and try to plug in by contacting specific professors doing research you are interested in. Be prepared and willing to give up significant blocks of time. My D spends three full afternoons a week at ND. She dropped soccer, Key Club and other things in order to do this.
