I often hear many people saying 'they have done published research or researched in a lab'. How do you do that? I go to a public school in which I dont have links to such things, so where could I find places or people to help me do this?

Write some research proposals, then email them to every professor in the appropriate department at a local university. Hopefully one of them would be willing to mentor you.

Don't write research proposals. The professors will laugh in your face. Email the professors asking if they need a research assistant in their lab. It would be even better if you read a couple of their papers beforehand so you can mention something about their research in your email.

^^ agreed, don't write a proposal, I did that and the guy basically laughed in my face. Luckily, i have some connections and I had the opportunity to conduct my research in a microbiology lab at a local university. So yea, asking for a assistant position will help.
