I will be enrolling in UT this fall.
I am very interested in engaging in a research program.
As a freshmen, what opportunities are out there?
I tried looking at the Cockrell Engineering website, but I didn't find much.

If any one of you were in some kind of research program as a freshmen (cockrell engineering), please let me know how you got the position and what you did!

thanks!

As a freshmen, what opportunities are out there?
There are so many different research webpages.
Do I just find a few interesting topicsl, and then email the chair or professor or researcher in the research?

I am so confused on what I should do!

If any one you guys have an experience about this, please feel free to help me!

thanks!

My son, a freshman, met a young man doing post-doctoral work in the BME building. My son expressed interest in doing some research, and this young man and his supervising professor agreed to let DS help! He doesn’t get paid, but he really enjoys the work. He did e-mail a couple of profs last week to see if there’s any work he can do over the summer.

You might try sending a few emails, then follow up with phone calls. It might be easier to pursue work once you’ve started classes. If you take an intro class, talk to your professor.

When I was at grad school at UT, I had a couple of undergraduates helping me with my research. My advice if you get a job, paid or unpaid: Show up on time and work hard! The two boys working with me weren’t that reliable, and it was very annoying.

Thank you for your advice!

Talk to your professors after class and express your interest in doing research. Also, you can send emails to other professors even if you are not in their classes and express interest in doing research to them as well.

Even if they personally don’t have a position for you, they will keep you in mind if they ever hear someone needing help they will recommend you.

So, should I just wait until the semester begins?
I wanted to talk to some of the people and ready myself during summer if I could.
But the thing is, I don’t know who to talk to…
