Research opportunities for undergrad engineering majors

Could someone who is a current student comment on the availability of research opportunities for CIT undergrads (ECE). Is it easy to come by such an opportunity? How about for freshmen?

My son was accepted to CMU for CIT (ECE) as well as Rice (and a number of other schools). He received a research scholarship at Rice that guarantees him a research mentorship his first 2 years (as well as compensation and a 1/2 tuition scholarship). He received nada from CMU. He's leaning towards Rice (for obvious reasons), but he loves the ECE program at CMU. Any thoughts?

Also, I've asked this before, but does anyone know if it's possible to ask for a reconsideration of merit scholarship? He did not apply for financial aid because we would not qualify. I know the Financial Aid department will evaluate offers from peer institutions, but I was wondering if it's possible to get them to do it if he hasn't applied for FA?

Thanks!

Getting into research is extremely easy at CMU. If your son expresses deep interest in a topic, he will get a research position.

For example, I e-mailed 4 professors during the summer prior to my freshman year - asking them if they would be willing to have me in their lab. 3 of them replied saying they would be more than happy.

Another thing to note is that if your son is interested in ECE, he may also be interested in Robotics. CMU has the #1 Robotics Institute. CMU also has the only Robotics minor available to undergraduates. Personally, during my freshman year my research was based around robotics.

As for FA, my recommendation would be to call the admissions office.
