How good are research opportunities at Haverford (bio department)? When student can be involved in research project (sophomore year, junior year)? Is senior year research tutorial pretty much the same as research experience at other colleges?

Thanks.

Generally, the research at Haverford in terms of the type of projects and the general quality of results obtained are on par with most any of the work that would go on in labs at large, research universities minus the more competitive environment. We have an excellent set of top quality research equipment, and because Haverford is small, this becomes easily accessible to undergraduates to use in research. There's no excessive bureaucracy of waiting three days to use a CD or NMR machine, or not having access to it at all because P.I.'s don't allow undergraduates to use them. So if your interested in microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, developmental biology, genetics, etc, there are some great labs at Haverford to explore your interests on a number of model organisms.

You can get involved with research projects as early or late as you'd like. Most professors are generally excited to see interest from students (not even necessarily from science disciplines, but pre-meds as well)...so there are freshman working part-time during the year or full time over the summer off of individual research grants from a professor or from Haverford funded programs like HHMI or MSP.
