Is it possible to do research freshman year? How are the research opportunities in general?

In general, I hear they are great. Freshman year (I think usually called “first year” there) I don’t know.

Most student research is done through MAPs, which are usually done over the summer between your 2nd and 3rd or between your 3rd and 4th years. If you wanted to do research before then, you would probably have to go talk to one of the professors personally and tell them about your desire to do research.

aren’t there opportunities to assist professors on their own research? I thought MAPs were more of student-designed ideas. I would imagine that first-years generally wouldn’t be assisting the profs with their research, largely because so many courses that first year are at the introductory level.

I love this video about science at Grinnell:

(although I’d imagine that other disciplines offer research opportunities, too).

On this admissions page, it discussed options for individualized study:

There are multiple first-years who got summer research with Grinnell professors.
