lol :D

"There were about 6 or 7 of us astrophysics people last year"

are you serious? ...WHY?

lol :D

So guys, when does the RSI 2006 app come out??? I'm eager to start on it...;)

It probably won't change much. In any case, the only important question/question you can actually "work" on is Question 2, and that definitely won't change.

According to CEE, it'll come out in December, but I don't think the application will change that much. So enjoy working on the questions. It's almost as fun as these college apps.

Haha I'm never going to finish my RSI app... or college apps for that matter. I'm spending way too much time on my Gov School school-wide app, and that only requires a 250 word essay clarifying my interest for the school and a list of activities (but I'm attaching a resume instead - my GC said it was alright... thank god I'm done with that... although it's 3 pages...)!

um... why are you worrying about college apps now?

Ugh... I can't apply for Gov School(state already gives us free room, tuition, and board all year long).

Still, if it is binding, I wouldn't apply, especially if I had any chance for RSI, etc. Also, I'd rather just do some indepedent research this summer again.

If I do get nominated for GovSchool AND I get into another program I'd rather go to (well, if I get my decision before GovSchool apps are due...), my plan is to submit a reallllllly crappy application for GovSchool. If I still get in, that just proves that NJ really DOES have the worst environment in the world. If I don't, then I'll go somewhere else. =D

I heard Gov. School for NJ is huge deal, so going would be quite an accomplishment.

When are Gov. School apps due? Admission decisions don't come out particularly early... :-/

Yeah, if Gov School acceptances come out after Apr 1, can't you either (1) withdraw the app, never telling your school if they would get mad, or (2) send in a "supplement" which talks about all the mischeif you would cause if they would accept you, i.e. "i have done some thinking and it's time to let you know what i've been thinking about. if accepted to Gov. School, I wholeheartedly promise to bring AS MANY drugs as possible, hire prostitutes on the weekend, and steal from other participants." (application sabotage)

Hahaha. Nice idea, zogoto. Maybe I'll try that.

sr6622, Gov School in NJ is a pretty big deal here. At my school's college fair, one of the Yale (class of '05) representatives told me that one of the things that got her into Yale was NJ Gov School. Most schools are incredibly selective. My problem, however, is that I'm applying to Governor's School on the Environment, which is supposedly the easiest one to get into.

Applications for nomination (by the school) are due tomorrow, but applications from the nominees to the county level are due in December or January. I'm not sure when county level and state level decisions come out, though.

IF I was sure that I'd get into a more prestigious program (like RSI or something), I'd probably apply for the Sciences school; I have no chance of getting in there because my activities aren't specialized enough. Plus, I may not even be nominated by my school, since a friend of mine has better math/science EC's than me.

Then again, my summer program options, in order of preference, are RSI > Gov School > independent research > TASP > NJSP. So if I had to go to Gov School, I'd only be missing out on RSI (hah, only). I could still try to take on a research project before and/or after or something.

theoneo: If you can't even get nominated to NJ Gov School of Sciences by your school since you're not specialized enough "scientifically", then I highly doubt you will get into RSI. If I were you, I would work hard on the Gov school app to make sure you get accepted there first and foremost. Worry about super-selective programs like RSI and TASP IF AND ONCE YOU GET ACCEPTED THERE.

Just my 2 cents yo cuz I really wish my state had a Gov school to fall back on...:(

Ouch. That hurt.

Gov School will want half the juniors in my school's Science Club because most of them were on the SciOly team that got them to nationals in middle school, etc. I'm not an officer in Math Team or Science Club, but some of my friends are, and they're all applying for GSS, so they would make it over me (my high school can only nominate one male and one female per Gov School school, and the guy who's going to make it is like VP of Math Team and has won competitions and stuff. Unless if he applies for engineering. But even if I get nominated, there'd be tons of other Math Team and Science Club presidents).

Plus, my focus is on ecology/biology, and that conveniently works best with Gov School on the Environment.

However, people on this thread - people who have actually gone to RSI, mind you - have successfully convinced me that not everyone who goes to RSI has won national competitions and stuff; instead, a heavy emphasis is placed on the essays. If you want to dispute that, though, talk to the rickoids.

(Plus, I'll hopefully be starting a research project very soon that I wouldn't be able to put on my Gov School app but I'll be able to use for RSI.)

In other news, I just finished my Gov School app! Whoooooo!

WOOT!

I'm not getting in...why am I here?

Still....WHOO!

theoneo, take what the Rickoids on this site have to say about RSI and education with a grain of salt. The problem is they are all VERY modest and they all have some academic accomplishment that is magnificent. For example, I talked to a Rickoid who claimed he had done nothing at all prior to RSI but the later told me he had gotten a perfect score on the ACT, which he didn't mention because he didn't think it was that big of a deal.

I don't know you personally so I hope you realize I am not discouraging you or something. All I'm saying is that it seems that if you haven't done some serious research, placed statewide at least in some math or science competition, or gotten a near perfect score on some Collegeboard standardized test, you better hope you can think like Newton and write like Shakespeare when completing that app. Good luck anyway, i'm probably in the same boat that you are in!!!:)

A friend of mine went to RSI a couple years ago and he didn't win any huge competitions or do any research. Sure, he got a 1600 on the SAT, but there's no way you can say that got him into RSI.

How about you just stick to your own chances and don't evaluate others based on a few comments they make in a public forum when they don't ask for them? Thanks.

whoa whoa let's keep the tension low shall we? :)

tensions are fun.

the only reason why tiffany didn't go to RSI is because she didn't even apply. she skipped sr yr in hs and went straight to Princeton.

i have to agree with neo...most of us are very unconsciously modest, so when we go "oh how the hell did i get into RSI?" or i didn't really do anything significant.........besides __________.
