Hmm, for essay number two, are they looking more for why you're interested in the field/subfield (what it means to you, previous work, etc.) or what you KNOW about it and your reasons for why it's important. The way I see it, some people could simple say yeaah they want to do environmental engineering because the world has huge environmental problems and it's a crucial issue of current times... but not put ANYTHING about why they personally are interested in it, or if they have any experience with the subject.

I have a question regarding the transcripts we have to send. I thought that the high school transcript would have to be sent as it was sealed by the school but from some of the posts in this thread it seems that people write down other scores on their transcript and then seal it and send them in. Which is true? Also, I have to get a transcript from a college I've been taking math courses at. The college website says "All transcripts sent to students are marked "Issued to Student" and may not be considered official by other educational institutions." However, the RSI brochure says that all materials need to be enclosed in one envelope. Should I have the transcript sent to be and be marked as such or should I have it sent to RSI directly and be "official?"
Thanks.

teh0therside, I think you can get it from your school office, where they will have it signed, making it "official" and then they will seal it so you can't open it and somehow change your grades.

you shouldn't send anything separately, as there is always a risk that it will be lost.

The instructions say that the envelope should accommodate an unfolded application...but my mentor gave me his rec in a sealed regular business envelope with institution logo (4 x 9ish). I'm probably being OCD, but do you think RSI will care --- my other teacher recs will be in 9 x 12 envelopes and fit into the 10 x 13 package.

Don't worry, I would be OCD too. My teachers are probably going to be doing that as well.

But it should be fine! As long as you don't open it!

by the way, what does it mean by field and subfield? are we supposed to have two for each-so then we'd have to address the 6-10 most interesting things?

All my teachers gave me their recommendation letters folded in a 4 by 8.5 envelope (not sure of the exact size, but the normal size) but then I read that you weren't supposed to fold your application. So were the letters not supposed to be folded? Will I be fine?

in the instructions, it tells the teachers to return the recommendation in an envelope, so everyone should be all right

Uhh...should I send my SAT II scores? I have only taken one, back in freshman year, and its a foreign language test...of which I had below 50th percentile (even though it was above 700).

I have great SAT/ACT/PSAT however, so I don't know if its worth it to jeopardize my app with some crappy freshman year SAT II when my PSAT is good enough.

Also, I was reading past threads and seeing stuff about having schools sending the app/principal's signing? Where would a principal sign? - the flap of the envelope of the entire application or something? I was planning on compiling/sending the app myself...

Breathe...Everyone, all together now.

When is the exact deadline this year anyways?

This year the arrival deadline is Feb. 8th.

What do we need to do as far as sending SAT/ACT/PSAT/AP scores? Is self reported sufficient?

i'm wasn't sure about that one actually, i listed them, but i also photocopied the score reports and included them with the app

So for the application, how much does our school report/do? Do they record my PSAT, SAT II, AP scores and put in my transcript, or do I have to record everything, get the transcript from them, and just have them seal and send it? And how long before the deadline does my school need to have the application?

is the feb 8th a postmark deadline or do they have to have it in their office by then?

No offense, but you guys should really read the website and application materials - the directions seem pretty straightforward. On the website, for example, it clearly states:

Key Dates for RSI 2008

February 8, 2008
All application materials must be in the CEE office by the 8th

It does not say "must be postmarked by...."

I did check the website and read the application, but I'm still confused about everything from my past post.

abejnood, these are answers you'll have to get from your school. We don't know if they will put your scores on your transcript or how much lead-time they will need to ensure it arrives by the deadline. Ask your school.
You can certainly put copies of your score reports in the envelope with your application and everything else that needs to be mailed.

hey how competitive do you think this year's RSI apps will be?

Even though every year the applications go up...and the class of 2009 is supposed to be the last great group of kids, it seems like it might not be as tough as the past few years. Then again, in general, there have been much less posts on this RSI thread/other science activities like USAMO/USABO/USNCO/USAPhO this year...guess all the superstars dont frequent CC as much.

Looking through some of the past RSI threads, some of the people that have applied are utterly amazing...
