Research Science Institute ( RSI ) 2008

I planning on sending out my app tonight/tomorrow --- any recommended mail carriers (not sure if I can reach the post office)?

Edit: Also are we supposed to restate the question on our essay answers...that would take up room that I don't want to lose (esp questions like #2 that would take 3 lines to write out)

^i didn't restate. ..although it was kind of implied in my answer? Lol that's probably a bad response, but whatever :)

Surely after reading whatever fraction of of circa 75/.06 of these, they know which questions are which. It's gonna feel so great to put this puppy in the mail...for like two minutes until I realize that all I've done is begin seven very long weeks...

(font size 10 and .8" margins...may go back up to .9-1" w/ editing... =( )

Not like I've got time left to do anything about it, but two related questions:
1) the app says that our essays will only be used to place us with mentors, and only if we are chosen. Does that mean that in theory they dont read your essays until you've been chosen?
2) for essay 2, is the point to show your passion/intelligence/knowledge, or your doable ideas for research, or both?

since you guys are mostly done with ur apps... let's do a list, so when we get the results back we can see how many actually got in, and from where xD (got this while checking out the RSI 2006 thread)

RSI USA
MITdude (MD)

RSI Internationals
??

just add on to this list as u post, keep names of previous pplz =D

quick question... do we need to give the app to principle to sign and seal before sending it off? i don't see that req'ment anywhere...

RSI USA
MITdude (MD)
DMRenrel (GA)

RSI Internationals
??

I think they took that req off MITdude --- I asked that question awhile back, and it seems like past applications had a spot for the principal.
I think I'm going to stick with .9" with size 11 font (size 10 DMRenrel, whoa!)

RSI USA
MITdude (MD)
DMRenrel (GA)
Classof09 (NJ)

RSI Internationals

.75" margins with 11.5 font :) I'm completely rewriting number 2 though so...

=] I'm sending mine tomorrow. Will they really not consider me if it doesn't show up by the 8th?

i don't know... in the 06 thread one guy got accepted even after he sent the apps in late... i'm prolly sending in the transcript and a rec letter late lol, oh well.

did u guys all post a summary of ur stats? it would really help to see where we stand amongst everyone lol. mine sucks... only 2130 SAT and PSAT is worse... so dun worry about me lol (no ISEF or whatever... like next to no awards...). i got some exp. in some MIT programs tho, so that may help

well, my psat is barely in the 200s, uhmm i'm in council but that's not rly anything because it's not science, and i did some camps and volunteered some, but no internships/research. i just love science!
apush not so much. thank god we dont need that.

Does a basketload of math and science competitions/olympiads help, even if we don't place well enough to be mentioned? (as in: i didn't place in a prestigious math contest (let's say HMMT), or perhaps being a Usabo semifinalist but miserably failing the semifinals exam?). Also, is a truly large amount of science/math competitions or maybe a summer program (ie: COSMOS) sufficient to act as quasi-substitutes for research? (i know many of you guys said people don't need research to get into RSI, but from my understanding more people w/research have gotten in than w/out it?)

also, if our 1st and 2nd choice fields and subfields are a bit too different (my current ones are Biology, Genetics and Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence) is that a bad idea since it would be harder to prove your ("extreme") passion in both of them (while, say, 2 different subfields under Biology would be easier)?

oh and last thing: the "2 people per state" rumor is false...right? O_O

to apply to rsi, would i need to have a us citizenship or a permanent residence? I can't find it onlin...;( THank you sooooo much.

Ugh.....it's going to be a long wait. Do you think they care that my school refuses under any circumstances to give "official" transcripts to anyone other than seniors applying to college, and stamp all other transcripts with "UNOFFICIAL" in large, bold letters?

Do you mean that your high school issues no official transcripts for juniors, or will they not give one to the student? Schools are usually willing to send official transcripts directly to academic offices like CEE.

Students whose schools have a "direct-send" policy for official transcripts should include an unofficial transcript with their application and follow it up with an official copy sent from the school directly to CEE. The unofficial copy allows CEE to proceed with processing your application, but they do want an official copy for final selection.

Do any of you have a backup summer plan in case you get rejected from RSI? How many camps you are applying?
