I'm still confused on what to write for #2:

Are we supposed to solve a math problem?
How can you "talk" about its interestingness?

I'm still confused on what to write for #2:

Are we supposed to solve a math problem?
How can you "talk" about its interestingness?

For #2, I think you're supposed to talk about a research question in which you are interested and explain why you would want to pursue it.

For myself, I kind of want to continue my previous project, which was comparing the properties of aluminum and wood baseball bats and the effects on their performance. Should I state as my key point of interest or something more specific such as how their different design of aluminum bats allows more hits with high exit speeds than wood away from the sweet spot? With the latter, I could go into my previous research and explain how I arrived at this general question/hypothesis.

Wait, so... for #5, you said "all years" - so should we mention what we expect to take in senior year?

I'm a little concerned because I have no previous research experience, and although I'm in the process of getting an internship my interview isn't until after jan 1st :( Should I still mention it? I have fairly good stats (got my 2380 SAT yesterday!), coding and robotics experience and 5's on both of my sophomore APs, but the more I read this thread the less it seems to matter. Especially considering how exceptional so many applicants are and the fact that I'm from NY.

I would LOVE to go to this program, but I'm a little worried about my stats. What are the general stats for people who get in to RSI? namely, for someone who did a biology research project.

Is it possible for someone with no research experience get in to RSI?

^ to waterlilly, stats are not that important so don't worry
to JSMGH, I don't have any research experience either..and I'm applying. so...

Also, I have a few questions, if anyone could please answer them:
1. For the career question for #1, what did you guys put? It's really vague and I'm really not sure what my plans are for the future..
2. Also, for the field/sub-field, it says "state 1-2 most interesting problems." Does this mean I have to do more research on my stated field, and find out about problems that haven't been solved yet? Or can I talk about problems that are being solved/have been solved by researchers? Would it be better to talk in a more professional manner, or a casual one? Thanks!!
3. Last question..just wondering, how were the people in RSI previous years? Were there any "cool" smart people? Or was everyone there a "nerd" who did research all day? And are there funny people who act stupid, but are still really smart? Are there people with different kinds of personalities? Just curious to see if I would fit in. Thanks!

people said that many of the people at RSI have varying personalities so i'm sure u'll fit in somewhere

as for #1, just state that u want to do something in science, but ur not sure where yet.... and something along the lines that ur exploring everything out there or w/e

for #2, u can do either. and it really doesn't matter in which type of voice u talk in--- as long as it sounds like u, and u don't use a trillion vocab words that really don't make sense with the context (unless u actually do talk that way)

for #3, as i said before, there are many different types of people who come to RSI so don't worry about that... i would think that there are some chill people

oh yea and for gblob. should i put in my long range goals answer that i want to attend RSI?? or is that too much? or should i even put RSI anywhere in my essays??? (except for 7, which asks for where we foudn out about RSI?)

So for question 2 if you had several narrowed down topics could you address them as your interesting questions if you could pursue them with an RSI mentor?

Yes that is correct

I just finished my essays.

They were waaaayyyy longer than I expected them to be, and I ended up having to make .25 inch margins on left, right, top, and bottom. Do you think the RSI people will not like this. I seriously cannot believe how long those essays were.

2821 words!

Also, my school only allows one AP before Junior year. DO you think tht will be a deal breaker. I am taking 11 this year.

I am really proud of my application, I worked really hard on it and I think it shows who I am.

The rest is out of my hands! Thank God!

Congrats on finishing! Yeah my essays last year also totaled 2100+ words. I ended up doing just what you did (0.25in margins). I don't think the fact that your school only allows 1 AP before Junior year will break your app, other schools have similar restrictions. Although it would be a good idea to list the 11 APs (! holy crap, that's a lot) you're doing this year.

yea hopeful! i just finished mine too (although i think i can put my voice in better)... it's 2967 words! yay. i did the same thing as both of you :)

but then also my essays sound like i'm a science fanatic. i guess that's a good thing???? (can anyone tell me anything about this?)

I'm halfway done I guess..with about 1200 words. How long was your guys' 1st and 2nd paragraph responses? When are you guys submitting? The postmark date is January 16th, so if I send on January 6th, (10 days beforehand) would it make it? Also, I think we should compile a list of where people who are applying are from. I'll start, just copy and paste and add your name and state.
