well last year they accepted 73 people out of 1500+ applicants (domestically..... i have no idea what the international rate was)

ok well 73/2000= 3.65%...
73/1500= 4.87%...
and I thought 50 were from domestic..so 50/2000= 2%..

^those numbers make me nervous. no offense to internationals, but they should just make this a domestic program.
By any chance, does anyone know how the selection works? Let's say I'm applying into subject x. Will my essays/stuff be sent to all the mentors available under subject x, and they choose or don't choose if they think i don't know anything about x? Or is there a special admissions committee.

nooo...... they say 50 domestic people but last year there were too many applicants apparently and they had enough funding so they picked 73.... aynway, apparenlty, they don't always give u the sub-field u want-- and no they do not have an arranged no. of spots-- cuz they find mentors for the students AFTER the process, not before it

Hey Guys, i hope everyone had an amazing Christmas.

just curious, when applying to RSI, how much does ISEF actually help you? That too, say if you won a grand award?

Also, I'm a little confused on the selection process. Would you guys say it is regionally biased?

lol RSI is like impossible to get into...

I was checking through some old AOPS threads, some user who was USAMO/2350 got rejected...wow

that means i have no chance....WHY DIDNT I DO SIEMENS!?!?

Oh yea wait, so if I make USNCO (which is like in early march), can i report it through an email or something?

ISEF helps you a great deal, especially if you make it to nationals...it is, along with siemens, the premier research competition in the US

Is anyone else concerned about teacher recommendations?

Are we allow to like "shadow" write it for them...because one of my teachers doesnt know anything about the achievements that Ive won and the other might need to be reminded of them...

i know that one of my friends who alreaady had hers filled out said that she gave her teacher a brag sheet...is that usually the norm or something?

Because the part "give examples of independent learning"...all my are non school related or club related-nothing to do with the class, how the heck the teacher gonna know that?

Um yea guys, how come this year's deadline is so early?? January 16th? I thought it was like February last year..ahhh

^tomjonesistheman, maybe they'd like to research each of us :) That'll take them time

Lord help me and all the poor sophomores who think they have a chance

PSAT - 211 80 Math
GPA - sucks - I'm not even going to report
3 APs freshman year - Bio 5 Cal BC 5 AP Computer Science
4 APs and Multivariable Calculus this year - World History, Chemistry, Physics B, Computer Science AB

SAT II - 720 Bio, 780 Math 2 (I know I suck)
ACT - taken in 5th Grade: English 19 - Math 28 Science 21, Reading 16 ( NOT GOING TO REPORT)

Missed qualifying for AIME by 1 question, which sucks cuz my practic3e tests that year show me getting a seven on the AIME

Did research unprofessional and not published but pretty heavy

Chess Club President.

DOUBT IF THEY WILL CONSIDER ELEMENTARY AWARDS

1st CML (perfect)
2nd MML ( Michigan Math League)

And I am in Texas and extremely passionate about science
My recs: 1 extremely good: My AP Chem teacher who raves about my ability
I haven't given the second one out yet.

And It is so sad that the deadline is the sixteenth, the day after finals!! My GPA is an unweighted 3.9 something this year, but completely sucked last year.

3% - just tell me now I have no chance.

Hey,

I am sorry to confirm your worries, but I don't think you have much of a chance THIS year.

however, you look like a really strong applicant for next year, as your accomplishments rival a lot of ours, and we are a year ahead.

Try some other research programs like SSTP at the university of Florida. I went there as a sophomore. it is kind of hard to get in as a sophomore, but nothing near the crapshoot that is RSI.

to get into RSI as sophomore, you pretty much need to be a prodigy with a lot of resources

But again, i think you have a great chance next year.

Umm I dont think they will accept any sophomores...im pretty sure it says somewhere that the program is intended for rising seniors...so even if you are like Evan O'Dorney (Ntl spelling bee champ, Internation Math Olympiad silver medal, composed orchestral pieces for SF orchestra), I doubt they would even look at your application.
And btw you have to report your GPA, its gonna be on your high school transcript that you send.

also, does anyone know that if you have a non-school-teacher recommendation (like some out of school professor) do they have to answer the same two questions as the teacher recoomendations? Or can they just write their own opinion why I am ready to do research? (without following the guideline two quetions about leader and strengths/weaknesses)

It does say it is for people who have completed their third year, but I checked with officials, its okay if you have completed the equivalent in math and science

Did Evan O'dorney go to RSI?!

uggghhhh... that kid seems like an a**hole. No offense to anyone who likes him , if that is even possible.

Does anyone know how they prefer you to verify standardized scores?

I have my official PSAT and AP results, I suppose I could send those in and make photocopies to keep.

What about SAT Subject test scores? How do they prefer those to be submitted?

Thanks

I dont think so, Evan went to MOSP didn't he.
And dont the two overlap by a week?

And this is his wisecrack against science:

Math is neat: A statement is either true or false In science, any theory can be overturned by experiment because science is founded on experiment. But in math, there are theorems that can never be overturned because they have been proved with logic.

He doesn't like science.

So thats a no, hopeful1992

wow the posts got all messed up

ok^ if they say that you can, i guess you might as well apply. Unless you think 50 dollars is going to be a problem, theres nothing to lose by applying. I dont have that great of stats either. But however, you do have to include GPA since its gonna be part of high school trasncript. My school already had finals, so im asking my school to include first semester on transcript (since i got straight As in 6 AP classes) by January 12 (or near that date)

For whoever asked about verification...its a requirement...but dont worry, most high school transcripts have it (they will list psat scores...) so you really dont have to do anything special...if they dont have it i guess you can photocopy it or print one off of your collegeboard account

and yea evan odorney's got aspringers which is kinda good thing but also bad thing...he did not go to RSI (my point was saying that no matter how talented a sophomore, they wont even look at it-i guess i was wrong since imustbecrazy emailed them and they responded that sophomores could apply)...doesnt matter though, he will get accepted to any college in the united states...hes like the next terrence tao.

anyone know the answer to my question. i emailed them but its holiday break so i doubt they will be working.

"does anyone know that if you have a non-school-teacher recommendation (like some out of school professor) do they have to answer the same two questions as the teacher recoomendations?
I don't see why an out of school proffesor wouldn't know you well enough to answer the two questions. Infact, isn't this - the fact that it is out of school, strenghthen the response to how you pursued independent learning, and if you are really strong in his subject - unless it is english or something - i don't see why he can't answer number one either.
