Research Science Institute (RSI) 2009

And it just says teacher on the top - it doesn't specify school. For college, i think its different, but I don't think the same holds about RSI

imustbecrazy... i also think it's better for u to hold off a year before applying. u can go to another presitigous reserach program camp (like SSTp or HSHSP).... or something just as presitigious as RSI---SSP.

^oh its not that he cant answer the 2 questions...basically im asking can he answer additional questions...

i was wanting him to answer the quesiton "why this student is ready to do research", which isnt a question on the rec...so i was just wondering if he can talk abouit that...unless he answers that question under "leader in science and math"

Hey guys, I have one last question about the essays-

Did you all (either applying this year, or previous Rickoids) talk about something SPECIFIC in your response to #2? For your interesting problems, were they specific, and very esoteric/detailed? or were they less scientific and more "casual" ? Thanks.

what do you mean specific quesitons...
mine were pretty generic...i thought the point of RSI was to go into detail.

You should really try to make it general... they look most at #1 and 3 :)

Um, they look at #1,3? how do you know that? I'm pretty sure all the questions are important. So, did anyone here talk about a specific problem in their subfield, and elaborate on it scientifically?

^ I did.

I talked about this one research project at MIT that i have been following for some time. I talked about the challenges the research posed, and i elaborated on some ideas I had (which were pretty innovative, if I do say so myself).

in essence, mine were very specific.

And even though sophs CAN apply, it is even harder for them to get in. the only people I know who got in as sophs were boris Alexeev and Kit Armstron -- super genius prodigies.

My Astrophysics one was general
My problem in the other one was specific.

yea mine were general...
because like i said, i think the point of the RSI program is to allow you to research specific things about your general idea...

and what do you guys mean by specific? DId you talk about how you were going to approach this problem or something?
Did you guys just say, im doing math and a specific problem is ____ theorem
or were you like im doing math, a specific probelm is the ____ theorm, i think i will use....stategy....to try and solve it?

Hi! I have a few questions.
1) I'm from Kentucky. How many students do they take from Kentucky, or is there not really a set number from each state?
2) Is it okay if I haven't taken the SATII yet?
3) On the essay question about fields and subfields, do you get to make them up, or is there a list you have to choose from?
4) I haven't competed in any national competitions, but I have high test scores and a great interest in math and science. Will this be okay?

Thanks!

i dont think there is a set number..I havent taken SAT II......you can make the subfieds no list...it would help that you did, but it wont hurt that you didnt

Has anyone seen their teacher recommendations?
How long is usually? Like how many words, how long page approximately?

Thanks

I think it is 1 per state, there is, appparently geographic affirmative action.

2) Yeah, they only NEED PSAT scores

3) You get to make them up -- as long as they are not way too abstruse or specific, Like proving a theorem, and as long as the field exists

4) The Essays get people in, as well as good test scores, and as long as you have competed in some competition in science or math, youre good. Also, you need to show passion in your essay

I didn't think you were supposed to see them. Wasn't it supposed to be "sealed".

Mine was pretty long, two total pages for both combined.

I don't know what "usual" is, but unless your teacher has minuscule handwriting, i think a good one should need extra paper.

1 rec: 2pages

"Um, they look at #1,3? how do you know that? I'm pretty sure all the questions are important. So, did anyone here talk about a specific problem in their subfield, and elaborate on it scientifically?

@tomjonesistheman - it says in the brochure that the program is for people who have completed their third year of high school or equivalent in math and science. and have a passion in science. I think 1 and 3 demonstrate the passion part

i just learned about this program and am thinking about applying
here's my resume:

(I go to a private school, one of the best in the state (.5 weight for AP/honors courses))
GPA (grades 9,10) (unweighted):4.0
GPA (grades 9,10) (weighted):4.2
yeah... i was really lazy back then...

GPA (this year) (unweighted):4.22
GPA (this year) (weighted):4.64
currently taking AP Physics, AP Calculus I, AP Comp Sci II, Honors Spanish IV, Modern European History (couldn't schedule honors, but will take the AP anyway)

SAT II's:
Biology: 800
Chemistry: 760
Math II: 740 :(
US History: 770

AP's
Biology: 5
US History: 5
Computer Science I: 5

PSAT: 227
Critical Reading: 80
Math: 74
Writing: 73

I am a member of Amnesty International at my school, leading scorer for our In The Know team (we don't have captains), president of Political Club, co-captain of our Robotics team, and am on the swim team

I have attended two summer programs before: OSU's Exploring Engineering through a Robotics and the Ohio Supercomputer Center's Summer Institute. Both are fairly selective, though of course not nearly as selective as RSI

And i've taken a japanese course at OSU (but I'm not asian... probably a plus when applying to programs like this)

I haven't done any independent research, but I read A LOT of science stuff: Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Discover, Scientific American, Science (I'm a AAAS member)

our school doesn't rank, but I am definitely one of the top students in the grade

do I have a chance of getting in, or should I not even bother?

My teachers havent written their recommendations yet..I was just wondering because I dont think one my of teachers will write that much (she is really lazy but she knows me well). Should I just bug her about writing more or something?

Also, are they suppose to be handwritten or something? What if my teacher has horrible handwriting? Can they just fill out the information on the sheet (like the teacher name, subjects taught...) and then answer the two questions on an attached sheet of paper that is typed up (neater)

And there is no geographical affirmative action...I know that there were multiple people that got in from like TJHSST and stuff...i also know that my state had 3 last year (and its not that good of a state overall).

Also I think they are going to take more than 50 domestic this year due to more funding

I should also mention that I haven't been involved in any math/science olympiads or competitions... unfortunately my school doesn't seem to participate in them...
