Research Science Institute (RSI) 2009

Dang…
well I am going to be doing a group project in SSP. I just want an extension…so I can submit to Intel/Siemens. It’s not like I’m starting completely from scratch…

Hey hopeful, you started the facebook thing right? For RSI 2k9?

Yup, that’s me.

SEE YOU THIS SUNDAY!

What are you researching?

I’m a little confused on when I can apply for this program.

Do I apply as a junior or as a senior?

You apply as a junior to attend the program during the summer between your junior and senior year. Be on the lookout for the application pretty early, because it’s due date is before many similar programs even release their applications.

wow, i feel dumb.

its not it’s.

I noticed that people said demographic plays a role in the selection process of RSI.

I wonder what state you should fill in if you are a student in a boarding school, say Exeter (New Hampshire) or Andover (Ma) but you actually reside in Northwest states such as WA or OR, which is not as competitive as California but it is not a state like Idaho or Alaska either.

hey, guys. and yes, it’s another “chance me” post

I don’t really have any science/math awards or prior research.

However, i am taking AP Bio, AP Calc AB, and AP Stats this year.
I got a 228 on the PSAT, with 78 in math.
I’m on the math team and robotics team.
I still have much enthusiasm for science and math, which i can show in my essays.
I think my recs will be decently to pretty good. I doubt they will be extraordinary.

do you guys think i have a chance?

It’s not completely necessary to have done research prior to RSI. However, not having any math or science awards (not any? local awards count for at least something) will make it extremely difficult to get in, even if your essays and recs are awesome. Your PSAT is on par (it’s either average or slightly below average). Have you taken any APs in the past, and do you have any SAT/ACT/AP scores?
In any case, I’d say apply anyway and see what happens. It’s been stated elsewhere, but if you don’t apply, you chances are 0%.

if you plan on posting on this thread, please post on the rsi 2010 one instead for public convenience.

Hey folks

I have a PSAT score of only 204 (thanks to the fact that I finished my writing section early and while editing my answers accidentally started erasing my math answers and filling the bubbles with writing answers). :frowning: I have a SAT score of 2160. I’m taking AP Pre-Calc BC (1 semester of Pre-Calc, 1 semester of AB Calc). My school doesn’t allow juniors to take AP sciences so I’ve only taken honors sciences. I’m not much of a computer geek. I don’t really have any serious research experience. I participated in PJAS (Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science) freshman year. It’s nothing really serious. I’m working on another science fair project for the Washington Carver Science Fair (it feeds into Intel). It’s about food preservatives. I want to be a Chemical Engineer and I am VERY passionate about Chemistry. I’m pretty sure I would have awesome recommendations from my teachers. Is it even worth applying? Do I have even the tiniest chance of acceptance?

I’m trying to find as many science programs, that don’t cost an exorbitant amount of money, as I can. SSP has been mentioned a lot in this thread. What exactly is it?

first of all, THIS is the 2009 RSI thread, move your comment to 2010, which is THIS year
but look, at first, I was also wanting others to “chance” me, and if you have read the other posts, I think that it is clear that no one here knows what it takes to get into RSI, and peopel have made it VERY clear that unless you apply you have zero chance.

In your case, the deadline is approaching, so idk if you want to write a bunch of essays + get rec letters this quick, SSp is the summer science program, go to that thread if you want

good luck
