kbbm24 & XRCatD: I mean I guess you’re right in the sense that middle school awards wouldn’t count for much…but here’s my take on things…the application never says that you can’t include middle school stuff. If they don’t accept, oh well…but it can’t hurt?

I’ve never heard of the program (of course that doesn’t mean much) so I can’t really tell you whether it is notable…sounds pretty notable though if its middle school ISEF. I’d put it in.

I’m pretty sure that middle school awards don’t count for anything, in terms of RSI admissions. They don’t matter for college admissions, so it doesn’t make sense for them to be relevant for RSI. I guess the only time they could be relevant if you want to express the development of a certain interest, through your participation in certain competitions.

I disagree that all middle school stuff isn’t noteworthy - for example if in jr high you independetly completed a university level science project and won top awards, etc. i would consider it pretty noteworthy. they probably want to see a lifelong interest in science, not something that suddenly sprouted a couple years into high school.
that being said, they probably don’t want to see every gpa award or math award you ever received in middle school.

DYSC is pretty good. I know a couple finalists in that thing, and all of them have gone on to compete (and win) in science fairs throughout high school.

I think if you have alot of middle school stuff but alot weaker high school stuff, that will actually hurt you because it shows you lack potential and you already hit the ceiling.

And Enigma…I’m pretty sure you have a better shot of getting than most of us. 4th place finalist is an awesome position. I wouldn’t worry too much if I were you…

Could anyone who has already been to RSI could say how many people who already had ISEF awards came to RSI last year?

As international student I asked if my country participates to RSI.The answer was positive and they told me that they forwarded my name to the ministry contact in Athens. But after that I didn’t have news neither from my country nor from MIT.I am so nervous and sad…What I supposed to do???Do the application or send an e-mail to them??

Please any advice would be helpful

I m so sorry for bothering you but I am so nervous about that:(

Oh crap…I realized I forgot to attach the application when I emailed my teacher for a recommendation. It’s probably not in the right format. He just emailed me back saying the recommendation is ready. What should I do? Should I tell him to change the format or should I just send it? I don’t want to trouble him more than I already have…

hey helen…I don’t know where you’re from and even if I did…I wouldn’t know if they do take your country…I don’t know if you’ve seen the application. If I were you…I would check out whether my country is on the little country scroll thing. Whatever you do…you should it quickly because January 15th is the deadline (not postmarked but like it should be at the application office by then) by snail mail… and it takes longer for letters from foreign countries to get here. I live in the country and it’s going to take 2 days so I should finish my app now or tomorrow. Figure out the latest you have to send the app.

haha…never mind…they forwarded it to Athens…so you’re from Greece. Duh. And you already have your application ready if you are considering sending it in. Yeah, you’re probably allowed to go (I can’t think of a reason why not). In any case, you should just send the app if it’s ready…just in case. You don’t want to miss the deadline only to find that you could have applied and maybe gotten in.

Btw from what I saw on the internet for how long it takes for letters to get from Greece to USA…you might want to send it through express (this site says it takes 8-12 days…at that rate you’ll miss the deadline. Try emailing the app…but even if it’s late just send the app if it’s ready)

Hey Helen, I’m glad I could help but I just wanted to let you know…I live in PA, USA and it’s going to take 2 days for the letter to get there. You live all the way in Greece…I imagine that it would take longer for the app to get there. Consider sending it ASAP…I don’t know what the express time is. I dunno, check if Jan 13th isn’t too late

Do you have a teacher who has sent kids to RSI before? Ask him/her! You would probably get better advice for that kind of thing from a teacherthan you would from any of us on the thread. It seems that most of us on the thread are from US so we wouldn’t know procedures for foreigners, especially Greece. No one else, from what I’ve seen of this thread, has expressed that they are from Greece. In any case, if you don’t have a teacher who has…just follow the typical procedure and follow up with modifications later. A friend of mine from India did that…they just followed up and were like ‘we want you to come but you need blah blah in your app. Add that by so and so time and you can come’.

It’s ok. You’re not really. Like I said in the edit of my last post…just follow the US app and then follow up later. If you have a teacher who has sent anyone to RSI, ask him/her.

I’d do that just to be safe…

Btw…can someone answer my question:
The application says in the rec section that teacher’s can feel free to use more space. Does that mean that their recs can be greater than 1000 characters so I shouldn’t worry too much about my bio teacher’s rec being too long (obviously I haven’t read it but it def looks longer sitting in my envelope…it’s two pages).
