When RSI says “official copies of scores required” does this mean - make a copy of the paper reports that collegeboard sent you with a copy machine?

^ yes

can we take a PSAT superscore? :stuck_out_tongue:

and how can we send in an official copy of a PSAT? WE just photocopy the stuff…?

@rooster7: you’re odds of acceptance aren’t very good, I’m sorry to say. You might be able to pull something with really good essays though.

Chances?

Last year I got a 215 on the PSAT, no idea about this year since we haven’t gotten our scores back. Still waiting on SAT as well.

GPA: 4.76/5 ish
Rank: 1

Awards and whatnot:
-AIME qualifier, various 1st to 3rd place awards at local math competitions (like GPML)
-Piano: awards at state/local level
-Chemistry Olympiad (normal division): 3rd place
-Treasurer of NEHS and I’m in all the other honors societies
-SSTP: a summer research program for 6 weeks
-also do debate (various awards at local level… nothing big), leadership councils, community service, etc.

wait… Chemistry Olympiad meaning USNCO? And you made the US team? Dude that’s amazing!!!

oh nooo no no no no.
it was the non-qualifying division. so it’s more of a regional award. not… national/international.
sorry, not that amazing.

To answer a few questions … (Take all of this with a grain of salt though since I don’t actually choose the people who get into RSI.)

Do I need compsci/programming experience?

As someone earlier mentioned: No. It’s really only necessary if you plan on doing compsci. Or, if you get in, they might match you up with a mentor based on experience. (Computational biology projects aren’t going to go to someone with no programming experience, for example.)

Will it hurt my chances if I only apply in one field?

I think it depends on the field. Biology fills up, especially if you’re a girl, as does math for boys. Engineering was the one someone asked about; personally, I don’t remember there ever being many engineering projects so I doubt only applying in engineering would hurt. But if I were you, I wouldn’t worry about “spots filling up.” Apply in whatever you’re most interested in (and not necessarily in areas that you did research in before); you don’t want to be stuck with a project you’re not interested in if you get in.

All these “chance” posts

If you want to go, apply. I know people who got in without the best of credentials while others who had better credentials were rejected. RSI puts a lot of weight in the essays and especially likes individuals who are enthusiastic about science research. That said, there is a certain baseline expected in RSI hopefuls so don’t expect to get in if your GPA/SATs are low and you have no ecs to speak of.

But seriously, RSI was the best summer of my life. I would recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat.

MY son recently received an invitation to apply for TASP for this summer. How would they have selected him for the invitation? Also, after looking at TASP, I got interested for him in RSI. He is talented in all subjects but loves science. His PSAT’S 234. HIgh scoring in all areas. Has been working in a research lab all summer and continuing into to school year. Would it make sense to apply to both?

whos started their essays
also a few questions

  1. how do you report AIME scores
  2. How do you report ISEF stuff?

all of that goes in the question about your ECs. Personally, I just made a list of awards bc I doubt rsi people want to read “okay, so I won this and this and this…”

I have three questions:

  1. Can one of your recs be from a History teacher?
  2. How do you send “official” psat scores?
  3. Can a research field be “environmental science?”

I really appreciate your help! Thanks.

wharton

  1. I think it says science or math on the rec form, im pretty sure you cant
  2. just a photocopy of the official score sheet
  3. yea, probably, its a big field, and one of the main ones at science competitions

I have some of my own questions

  1. Can you send a supplement rec letter, like from a lab mentor
  2. whats honestly the lowest PSAT score to be considered, the website says like 225, but what is the lowest someone else has gotten in
    THANKS!

^

  1. Yea i asked, you can send a supplement rec.
  2. i think my PSAT will set an all-time low, esp. with my sad 68 writing. however, i asked and confirmed that i can take a PSAT superscore…

so i guess i photocopy both score reports and they can see my ugly scores from way back… :P. my superscore is only 222 tho. sigh.

im talking about 201 LOW

you got 201? well it says that applicants who didnt meet the 220 cutoff can still have a shot if their score is offset by great ability demonstrated elsewhere. ur fine.

thanks
but that brings me to my other question
can you send in a score from a previous year.
***, i dont know, but my score dropped from about 223 to a 201 this year
why i have NO clue
so can i send in a previous year?

i would send in both, with a note.
my scores are not that great either, but I am going to apply anyway.

what kind of thing can be a field or subfield.
like what kind of research does it have to be, does it have to be lab stuff like bio or chem or physics.
Can it be something with finance, like markets
Like which of the following sound like they might be reasonable
Math - Finance
Physics - Quantum Mechanics
Engineering - Robotics
Business - Anything (suggestions?)
