Research Science Institute (RSI) 2010

doesn’t matter where you come from right? ex: considering the advantages/disadvantages of mixing int’l students in there (US citizens but not permanent res).

hmm… “1/3 of students accepted are international”.

interesting.

Unless things have changed in the last 3 years, they accept around 50 US students. Then they have international students from selected countries. The international students do not have anything to do with the number of US students accepted.

I’m an international student + US citizen (:
Hm, I was thinking of applying to RSI… I highly doubt I’ll get in (I don’t have any great science/math awards or anything), but it just sounds like such an amazing experience that I feel compelled to give it a shot anyway.

so really, does anyone know how important computer skills are? I honestly only know excel…will that hurt me alot?

and these chances posts make me feel really insignificant…

anybody have any advice on computer skills? what do they mean by “date expected” for the computer skills? do they mean that you should have taken a certain course or…

(oh yea, and how much do you really need those skills actually in RSI… <_<)

computer skills are unnecessary unless you plan on applying for a computer science based project
I don’t mean it’s cool to be computer illiterate, but as long as you can type like a normal person, programming skills really don’t matter; they’re only used for LaTeX, which they teach you the first week anyway

So, for this application, with the Field and Subfield, could anyone give “good” examples,
because I am not sure if mines is too broad or not varied enough.
My specific fields are:
Biology-Oncology
Biology-Cognitive Neuroscience

do you think that putting two different fields would increase your chances? im planning on doing engineering field and then a specific subfield for my first one. for the second field/subfield i want to do engineering again and then another subfield, but im worried that its too similar. i do have comp sci background, do you think it would be better if i put computer science as my second field? that way if the engineering spots fill up maybe ill get in for comp sci?

My friend had a 240 and 2400. Rejected. RSI is way hard, but it’s great essay warmup for SSP or TASP.

so i got a 218 on my psat this year
should i even apply anymore or just forget about it? lol

for sureeeee their essays were great practice for my SSP application

240 and 2400 really means nothing, keep in mind that you’re applying against USA_O regulars

I would hope that someone with a 240 and 2400 would at least have competed in one of the four olympiads unless they were extremely anti-science. Perfect scores don’t require brilliance (could just come from loads of studying) but they do usually demonstrate some amount of cleverness and intuition. And qualifying for an olympiad is much much easier than making RSI (at least 10 times easier).

^ so if we don’t have any olympiads… just ONE sci fair and isef finalist (no awards), we’re pretty much screwed huh? (besides some school-level science ECs)

I have a question…

I am international student and i am interesting for RSI…

The only bad is, that i didn’t give the SAT exams yet because I had a health problem…:(

Can I do the application?

your situation is completely different from ours, you have to contact the people in charge of preliminary screening for your country.

hey guys, how are you sending in your SAT II official scores? I checked the “receive scores online” box so I have no print documents. I contacted the rsi people and asked if I should just print out the web page showing our scores, but they just replied “please send in print form with your application”. wth?

Call collegeboard, and ask for a paper copy, they will send a copy to you. You can also ask them to uncheck online copy selection. I did the same thing for my son
