Hey guys, is research required for medical school, i mean is it mandatory to work in a research lab or is it optional? Thanks in advance

Basically mandatory at some medical schools, beneficial at most, neutral at a few, harmful at a few.

how the hell is it harmful at some?

Some schools really really don’t like it. ECU comes to mind. They’re rare.

Some schools (like mine) are very much into putting out great clinicians, and research (while there still is a decent amount of research going on by faculty) is a minor secondary concern. I don’t know if harmful is the best word, but I think the idea is that if you have a huge amount of research, they might question why you are applying to a school with such a clinical slant.

For what it’s worth, I had absolutely no research… zip, nada. It never even came up in the interview for the med school I’m currently at.

harmful for bob jones university medical school, i would imagine.

I think any knowledge of science and practical matters is harmful for BJUMS.

For the record, I happen to know of some medical professionals with undergraduate degrees from Bob Jones, and I’m sure they’re perfectly competent at their jobs.

for the record, that university represents everything that is wrong with the united states of america.

I didn’t do any research either… lots of shadowing. Do it if it interests you, otherwise find something that does.
