i think it's "the SECOND most sexually active dorm in the US" ... but still.

That rumor is just that:

Quality-wise, all of the dorms on the foggy bottom campus are pretty much the same. Thurston is a little more cramped and a little less centrally located but it really is a great experience to live there just because it's a highly social environment. Those who don't live there end up partying there anyway, so if you're choosing Madison or Crawford because they're centrally located you may want to consider that your nightlife may be centered at Thurston. At any rate, your primary objective is to get housed on foggy bottom as the commute to and from the vern is astronomically inconvenient.

I lived on the MVC freshman year. As a freshman, I would recommend living on MV. The room upgrade makes the many shortcomings worth it.

Pros...

Rooms are much nicer than the freshman options on FB, and even some sophomore options. MV rooms are clean and quiet, while freshman rooms on FB are filthy and noisy.

Safety. On MV you could literally leave your laptop in the middle of the hallway for an entire day, and it would not be stolen. On FB, it would probably be gone in two minutes. There is not really any crime on MV.

The library is nicer and less crowded.

There will supposedly be a shuttle this year connecting MV to American University, where there is a Whole Foods, Best Buy, and other shopping options.

You can take all your classes on MV if you wish, making it a one minute walk to class much of the time.

Cons...

Only about 20% of the dining options available to FB residents will deliver to MV. I eat late, so I often found myself having to decide between pizza or cheesesteak four times a week.

Ames Dining Hall on MV closes at 7:30 PM, and the food makes my high school cafeteria seem like a gourmet restaurant.

The mail room is often incompetent, and twice I had packages full of cash go "missing".

The shuttle service is completely incompetent. They often wait for the entire bus to fill up, costing students 5-10 minutes, even when there are five other buses already there waiting. Drivers take extended breaks, costing you another five minutes. In the morning, it will take you 15-35 minutes to get to FB. Rush hour will take 45 minutes. Double those numbers if it is raining or snowing. If you have a lot of classes on FB, you may spend two hours a day on the bus.

If you want to go to a party, you usually have to go to FB.

freshman year it's all about thurston. i wouldnt reccomend living on the vern bc the shuttle service sucks and it's a pain to ride through traffic to get to classes. friends of mine that live there always end up crashing at someones dorm on fb on the weekends

"I think most people at GW are pretty serious about school, though I could be wrong because I'm an incoming freshman too. It just seems like when you're on campus you get a pretty good feeling that people are primarily there to learn."

100% WRONG!! hahaha...about 5% (maybe, being generous here) of GW students are like that :)

Go with Thurston or maybe Madison. Crawford is pretty gross, even though it has a great location. Lafayette is incredibly quiet, and whenever I went there I got the impression that people kept to themselves a lot. Madison is new as a freshman dorm so I can't really comment, but it has a good location and the rooms are nicer than in Crawford. Thurston is the quintessential freshman dorm and even though I was ready to leave by the end of the year, I met so many people and had such a good time that it was all worth it. I didn't feel the need to party all the time and I ended up with good grades, so I don't really think Thurston had a bad effect on my studies. It's easy enough to go to the library or Thurston's basement when you need to study, and it ready is only loud on the weekends.

ok i lived in thurston my frosh year and at first i was sooo not thrilled bc i was a shy nerdy dork who liked to sleep and i really liked it to be clean and new. so i got the exact opposite.

but as i move out now and into a soph dorm, i really wih i could just stay in thurston...i loved it so much, in the first wk i was already referring to it as home. thurston is one of the key ways that gw gives that college experience and it holds such a dear spot in my memories!!! sure you can live in a newer cleaner dorm like somers but youre on the vern!!!!!! that just sucks. you came to gw to be in the city!!!

I have some questions regarding a 4 persons room in the Thurston Hall Upper:

Is it physically divided into separate spaces?
Are there bunk beds?
What about the bathroom?
Is there a study alcove or anything similar?
Can I find a floorplan for quads somewhere?

thurston quad:

there is one main room, which is longer than it is wide, for the four beds and desks. you all sleep and study in the same space --- so set study hours and STICK TO THEM!! Make each other take phonecalls out into the hallway or into the closet, its just considerate.

the beds have the option of being bunked (i recommend you bunk at least one set -- we tried about six different arrangements and this way was the only way we could really be able to function).

there are two walk in closests sectioned off by large doors. one of these closets, the bigger, connects to teh bathroom. get this closet!!! its easiest for after you take showers etc for privacy and just easier in general.

the bathrooms are grossa t first but you get over it fast. i recommend you bring a shelf that can be installed on the wall or something because there isnt much storage space or counter space at all. some extra wall hooks would be good for towels too.

there should be a floor plan on the GW housing website...

no study alcove. just all out there.

quads are a tight fit, but you get more closet space per person than other rooms. also there are a handful of quads that are two rooms and those a really nice (-04's or -05's maybe?), but chances are you just got a normal one.

im considering gw as an undergrad, how does housing work exactly? what are LLC's/ themed housing? i would apprieciate a nice general overview of gw housing? :)

ggwu2010, those few nice quads are in thurston? do you know where they are by any chance?

yeah, they're either the -04's or the -05's (i.e. 205, 305, etc.) but I forget. There's a some variation between a lot of the rooms in Thurston in general, like some triples are one huge room whereas some are multiple rooms.

what are the different floor plan possibilities for a triple in thurston?
