Just wondering, do individual residential houses and/or the college houses have a unique character or personality?

Really want to know, so...

BUMP

yes, they do. They change over time, but Helmreich has been known as a frisbee team house, Baxter is generally big on the football team, Ladd has (in my biased view) the best parties. The two new houses (burnett and reed) are just a year old, so I can't speak to them.

And there are people who swear by brunswick apartments, some kids love the tower. Chamberlain quads are great. Harpswell and Pine Street apartments are traditionally mainly seniors, but this year some juniors crept in.

hi, thanks for your post. So I can asked to be placed into a certain house? And how biased is your view (Is it an basically an understood fact that Ladd throws the best parties)?

also, what is your opinion about quiet or chem-free housing?

You apply to be in the social houses, but to apply, your dorm or the people you're blocking with have to be affiliated with that house. So you can apply to other houses, you just have to block with people that are in that house as well, which is why a lot of the times, if you apply to your affiliated house, they're mostly people from your freshman dorm. I don't really think you have to worry about that sort of stuff until you're going to be a sophomore.

Chem free people usually keep to themselves. There are people in there who drink, but mostly, they're a very close-knit dorm and are almost removed from campus, seeing how most people go out and drink. They usually play games and watch movies on weekends. They're pretty cool. The quiet-dorm didn't really work out this year because not enough people applied, so they only limited it to 2 out of 4 floors. But the whole dorm in general this year was less active party wise than other dorms.

so do chem-free kids not socialize at all with others? are they all nerds? prob. not. just want a better feel

Chem free is kind of a mixed bag. You get some kids who really keep to themselves, and others who do go out but just want a clean/quiet place to return to. As a whole I'd say they are a social dorm, but more inwardly so and less with the rest of the freshman bricks. But overall dorms really don't create distinct social boundaries.

thanks for this information ^^

also speaking of social houses...they all do have their own "personalities" but since different people live in them every year so their character does not always remain the same. Like oliver said, Baxter has a lot of athletes. Quinby this year has been very activist/crunchy, Helmerich smokes sizeable amounts of pot, Howell is chem-free, etc etc etc. Ladd does do pretty good parties.

during your freshman year, you'll go to the social house parties and see what they're like. Different houses have different famous theme parties early on in the year and you can get a feel.

Toga @ Ladd
Luau @ Ladd
80's party @ Quinby
Beach Party @ Howell
Grafitti Party @ Baxter

and more. you get the idea.
