Matching is very important for FMGs. Is he US permanent resident? He will do lot better on choices during fellowship if he applied for a work permit now.
No, they havenāt applied for a green card. Their ultimate goal is to return to Canada after residency.
I donāt think heās considering a fellowship at this point. Heās getting a J1 so he will have to return to Canada at some point anyway.
They are very happy he matched IM at all as a non US IMGš
Your daughter is US citizen right?
Why are they against holding a greencard in US?
Not against it, but they both want to go back to Vancouver after residency. SILās father owns his own practice and SIL can slide right in and take over.
They chose US residency over Canadian residency because of the 2-year return of service commitment. SIL would have to work 2 years in an underserved (and underpaid) area, usually waaaay north since he went to international med school.
If he must go back, it might not be worth applying for residency since it comes with a requirement to spend 6 months in US each year.
? Heās already matched and begins US residency July 1st.
The kids are good. They are very thorough and have well researched their options. This was the right path for them.
I meant permanent residency - Greencard. It comes with a 6 month stay in US requirement each year.
Please get back to the original point of this thread. Conversations about green cards can be moved PM. Thank you.
UTSW had a 2-day graduation ceremony. Last night hooding ceremony took place in University Auditorium and followed by dinner.
Today graduate certificate award ceremony took place in the grand Dallas Symphony Orchestra building with live organ music.
Out of 220 graduating students, 12 are MD/PhD and 19 are MD/MPH.
My child completed dual MD/MPH degrees in 4 years and starting her IM Residency in CA.
Our DDs residency graduation is mid June, and we are so excited to be attending. Itās a nice dinner honoring this yearās last year residents. This group did not have a med school graduation in 2020, so this is extra special!
My daughterās residency said they are not doing a graduation which is very annoying. I now have to wait for my other daughter to graduate next year. Both missed 2020 graduations.
Have they done these in the pastā¦pre-COVID? I wonder why they arenāt doing somethingā¦did they give a reason.
Not sure what they did in the past but it sounded like they sent them a gift instead that few didnt even accept because it came with a tax payment requirement.
Not all residency programs hold graduations. Particularly true for specialties that have larger class sizes, like IM, which can have class sizes of 75, 80 or even 100 residents in a single class.
D1ās class had 18 graduating seniors; D2ās class had 6. Thatās a lot more manageable to arrange than 80.
(And then there was that incident a few years ago at JHUSOM where the students/residents behaved so badly at a graduation party at a very upscale hotelāvomiting on artwork and furniture, public sex in the lobby, food fights with seafood from the buffet, fist fights, screaming at hotel guests in the lobby, generally lots of loud, obnoxious drunken behaviorāthat JHU is now forever banned from holding parties at the particular venue.)
The event we are going to is for 16 graduating residents. Itās a dinner at a nice hotel venue. Each resident has six tickets which I think is very nice. Iām looking forward to seeing how they acknowledge each residentā¦apparently they will be doing so.
Iāll let you all know how it goes!
Is your D staying back or going somewhere else?
She will be doing a fellowship at a different location than her residencyā¦but she doesnāt need to relocateā¦yay!
D graduated a few weeks ago. She was awarded another scholarship (much smaller then the last one) three days before her graduation. Go figure! The graduating classes of 2023 had zero interest on their student loans for all but part of their first year. Thatās a lot of savings on accrued interest.
D and her H are moving to their new city this weekend. Residency orientation starts in mid-June. Their current lease here ends on 6/30, so they still have to pay all of Juneās rent. In order to get the place they wanted in their new city, they had to start paying rent in early May, so they got hit with paying double rent for two months.
We will get to see them for a weekend in late July when we are all meeting up in a different state for a wedding that D will be in.
Very exciting time! Congratulations!
Hi was it a medical school or third party scholarship? I guess we are talking about residency so these would be for living expenses? Any feedback on what it was based on (merit?)
