Residency for Tuition Purposes?

Anybody know any larger schools (12,000 students+) that offer residency for tuition purposes? The only two I know of are Western Michigan University and University of Missouri-Columbia and I would love to attend a school where I can establish residency.

Thanks,
Matt

Then have your whole family move to that new state. Live there for,12 months…and poof, you will have residency.

What is your current home state? You have residency in THAT state. Why not start with those schools?

Thanks for the help, not. Schools like Western and Mizzou if you live in the state for 12 months and meet other requirements the student alone can get residency.

Read the fine print carefully. Lots of criteria to meet, even at Mizzou.

Just make sure that those “other conditions” are attainable. Many states have really tightened the ability to gain instate residency especially separate from where the student parent resides.

State schools are funded by state residents through income taxes. They are not in the habit of granting tuition reductions to people who have not paid those taxes. At most schools residency status for freshman year is maintained throughout your education.

Look a PRIVATE schools. Private schools offer FA & merit money without regard for your state of residency.

I just read the Mizzou requirements, and it does seem that you can establish residency. BUT before you have resided there for 12 months and have met all the other requirements (including living and working there for summer, and earning $2000 IN Missouri, you have to pay the out of state rate.

Parents cannot claim you as a dependent on their taxes. Will they give this up? I believe this would also mean there would be no tax credit for your family.

Utah makes it easy.

But don’t dismiss your home state.
