So I got a letter that they deemed me a non resident, so I'll be paying nonresident tuition! Well they say we can write an appeal, if we have "intended on living here for atleast a year," if we severe ties with former home, and live here for atleast a year.

I have gone to school here for 2 years, I am graduating from here, my dad was living in california before us, he worked here for almost 4 years, and we all moved together 2 years ago. This is my home now, but out of state tuition, especially with NO financial aid is death, seriously.

Anyone have success with this in previous years, please tell me theres hope

If your dad has been working in Cali primarily/exclusively, paying California taxes, etc., then you should be guaranteed resident status. Something must have been confused when you sent in your supporting material - being the dependant of a California resident = guaranteed residency.

Check out this website: [UCLA Registrar’s Office: Residence for Tuition Purposes–Exemptions and Waivers](http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/residence/exempt.htm)

"Dependent child of a California resident

A student who has not been an adult resident of California for more than one year, and who is the natural or adopted dependent child of a California resident who has been a resident for more than one year immediately prior to the residence determination date, may be entitled to a waiver of the nonresident tuition until the student has resided in California for the minimum time necessary to become a resident so long as continuous attendance is maintained at a post-secondary institution."

i think you have to have lived in california for the past 3 years to be considered a resident.

@nodnarb That is not correct. It’s one year ending on the first day of classes, but with the exceptions listed on the website I linked to. It’s irrelevant to binta92’s case anyway because he’s been a student the whole time he’s been in California.

@binta92 If your dad has been working in Cali and has declared you as a dependent the four years he’s been working in Cali, or even just the two years since you arrived, you should be fine even though you’ve been in school. Appeal and explain the situation clearly as you have here. Let us know how it turns out.

@binta92 I filed for residency also, and I am in the same case, except that I have lived in Cali for almost 3 year. When did you send your SLR and supplemental materials? And when and how did you get your response?

I went to my.ucla.edu and it’s still pending for me…so I’m sort of nervous…But I agree with UCLAboi, everywhere I searched, it’s 366 days living in Cali prior to enrolment day. So…appeal appeal!

I was in the same situation a year ago, when I was an incoming freshman. If you are graduating from a California high school, and have been here for 3 years, you’ll get exempted from paying non-resident tuition and even though you are still deemed a non-resident, you’ll be paying in-state tuition. If you are qualified for that, you should find the attached application form for tuition exemption with your residency letter. I tried appealing at first, but got rejected. But definitely try appealing first, but if that doesn’t work, you can always apply for tuition exemption.

Hope that helps.

Does tuition exemption guarantee in-state tuition for all 4 years? Or it this another process that you have to go through?
