just wondering... say I'm from MD and I go to a public school in NJ.. if I live off campus can I become a resident of NJ?

the way it works is it takes i believe 3 years before becoming a resident of wherever you live in...like get your mail, go to bed, register taxes, etc

One typically only gets residency after living somewhere year round for several years. I'm not sure about NJ in particular, though.

I'm pretty sure you're interested in becoming a resident so that you can get in-state tuition.

Many schools use a fixed-rate tuition system. The rate you pay when you enter the school is the rate you pay through graduation. You would have to check with your particular school to see if becoming a resident of the state is beneficial at all.

You should ask your school what the policies are. I know here in Florida, you can't claim residency unless you marry someone who's a resident of Florida, or you're 21. Or 24 or something stupid like that. Or if your parents live here, then you can claim residency. I think it may differ from state to state though.
