Residential College System?

What are some colleges with a great residential college system??

I have heard about Yale, Princeton and Harvard, but I would like to know more. (Especially on the west coast.)

Rice U in Houston
UCSD and UCSC in CA

UChicago has a residential “house” system. I don’t think it is as robust as Yale’s or Harvard’s system in integrating academic advising or extracurricular life into the living arrangement. This may be an area to explore on campus visits. What exactly does it mean to have a residential college or “house” system at each of these schools? Does a “house” get its own movie theater or swimming pool? Its own resident famous professor to hold forth at meals on Black Holes or sparrow beak morphology? Or is the “house” just another name for a small dorm?

Northwestern has Res Colleges.

The Claremont Consortium in California is not on a “house” system, technically, but it was modeled after the great British universities’ college system. Each college is separate and distinct, but they share many resources (e.g. libraries, social and athletic activities, et al), and students may eat in any of the dining halls, live on different campuses, and take a number of classes at other colleges. It is quite different from other consortia in terms of the campuses’ immediate proximity, and the fact that it was planned as a consortium from its inception.
