Residential College

So has anyone here heard much about residential college? I really want to go to UM, but having smaller environment may fit me. Also, if I were to go to UM I would want to be in marching band. How time consuming would these things be?

I’m in the RC! If you like the requirements, then do it. Basically, the biggest extra requirements are the art class and the semester more of language. Other than that, if you love languages, you won’t know the difference except that the classes are smaller. You also have to a first year writing seminar through the RC, which I don’t like but oh well.

Marching band is very time consuming from what I’ve heard. You spend a lot of days a week practicing, including at odd hours.

I’m in both the RC and the MMB! Definitely check out both websites. All of the RC requirements overlap with LSA’s requirements (living in EQ is just a perk). For the RC, the largest requirement is the language component, which is one more semester than what LSA asks for. However, you will complete the language req in less time and earn more credits than you would in LSA. The creative expression req is a university-wide requirement, so no extra work there. There are about 10 or so first year writing requirements offered, and from my own experiences and others, people really enjoy them. If you have more questions about the RC, contact the RC admissions office!

Being in the marching band is pretty time consuming, we practice every day from 4:45-6:15, which isn’t odd to me. I can’t imagine being at UM without being in the band (or the RC for that matter). Being in the band has been one of the best experiences of my life. And I would definitely encourage you to audition!

My S was in the RC for two years and then moved into pub policy, he will graduate this year. It was a great experience for him, basically a small school with the flexibility to access the broad u mich curriculum. My D will apply this year and is considering it as well (if admitted!) though she’s more stem-oriented.
