Waitlist people got the best dorms (I cant complain about it) ED kids were placed in forced triples and traditional triplets, they didnt read at all the questions about roommates, they didnt care, just put a number in each form and the lottery named the room.

I would have to disagree with you... I got my first choice (a traditional single).

Trapper, are you talking about this years incoming freshmen class? If so, how do you know this?

yes, he's talking about this year's class....D was just assigned a forced traditional triple ....last choice......and everything was in before May 1st's due date. Apparently several people were also assigned subfree dorms without requesting them and vice-versa too...very random room assignments.

how did you find out?
We have not heard anything from WashU yet pertaining to room assignments.

The room assignments went up wee early this morning on webstac

How do you know if the room is on a sub free floor?

Yes, my D was assigned her 4th choice, out of 4. (Not including singles, which are not for freshman) We're trying to be positive about it, but she really didn't want a traditional triple at all. Oh well, at least it costs less, but it is a bit disapointing, as housing was one reason she didn't want to go to a state school (ie: traditional triples!)

I don't know....just heard it happened to 2 people....hearsay....and I don't know what dorms are which etc....D didn't specify sub-free or not because her only real request was modern dorm(any)....family accessibility issues....and now that family member can't visit D ever.

Trapper, sorry but I also have to disagree with you. My D was ED and got her first choice of a modern double. I think it was just one of those random lottery things, some won and some lost.

My D got a forced triple, 6th choice and she was ED. I got a sarcastic reply when I called. Her friend got single modern room and she was from the wait list.

Cressmom...our D's are in the same position....6th choice.....makes no sense to me....especially with freshmen coming off the wait list getting modern singles! You know their housing app was in after May 1st's "priority housing" date.

Freshman housing is assigned randomly, meaning everyones applications are randomly given a number and then they start at the top and go until everyone is assigned. WashU does not do ED priority housing. I assume that they waited for everyone on the waitlist to submit their forms before randomizing everything. It is not the best system in the world, but most people end up happy once they get to school. If there is a huge housing problem, there is the possibility of switching once you get to school. One girl moved out of my freshman dorm and into another because of a bad roommate situation.

scmember, I would call reslife and explain your situation. They may be able to switch her.

Daughter applied early decision, no scholarship, got last choice - traditional triple. People are saying that if you're ED, no scholarship they give you the worst because they know you have to go - no choice.

My D was accepted ED - given an Elliott scholarship last month and got her 1st choice room (modern double) with her specified roomate (they found each other on Facebook). We feel she's very lucky after reading these posts....

I’m also lucky but I know many girls with 6th choice and I know last year traditional dorms had many problems (two attempted suicides and one rape)

My D is ED and no scholarship and she did get her first choice a modern double.

Re: Trapper's post-
They have implemented new security measures in the traditional dorms in response. Immediately after, the traditional dorms got fitted for peepholes for the doors (the newer dorms already had them). In addition, I believe there are several other measures being added over the summer.

Trapper where do you get your info (2 attempted suicides/rape in modern dorm)? I heard the rape happened in a modern dorm.

there was a rape in a traditional dorm for upperclassmen. according to official statements made by the university in response, the washu community has never seen a situation like that before. as a preventative measure, the university added peepholes to doors in both traditional and modern dorms, and i've heard that it is considering adding video monitoring to the main entrances to each dorm. obviously the fact that this dorm was one of the few older ones is irrelevant to the events that took place.

regarding suicide attempts: i had one acquaintance attempt suicide, and another leave in the middle of the semester because of psychological issues. both lived in modern dorms.

the point here is that your mental health, your physical health (unless you're allergic to linoleum?), and your general well-being are all entirely unaffected by whether you live in a traditional or a modern dorm.
