Residential vs Academic FIG

I am interested in learning about the first year interest group (FIG) program. I was looking on the website and saw stuff about residential FIGS and academic FIGS. My mom was under the impression they are the same, you live with people who share your classes. But I had thought that you choose either or: academic- study with people sharing your classes OR residential- living with new people= making new friends.

Does anyone know what the difference (if any) is?

Thanks!

It was discussed many times.

Residential FIG - you live in Whitis Court and take classes together, you have 2 community projects. FIGs are year long.

Academic FIG - you live wherever you want, you take classes together, usually first semester only. Very few special programs have year long academic FIGs. After first semester you are done. No community projects.

Academic FIGs - take classes with the same group of people.
Residential FIGs - take classes with the same group of people as well as live in the same area with them

I wouldn’t recommend doing a residential FIG. You get tired of seeing the same faces you know?
