Hey everyone. I’m a student at Purdue interested in finding some good resources for getting an internship. So far, I’ve used stuff like LinkedIn, AngelList, and an app called https://condecca.com
For those of you who have had internships, where did you find them? Should I stick with going through my university’s career services? I’m a freshman BTW.
Your career center should be your first stop, then your major department. You can also do some independent research about local companies. For instance, suppose you were a communication major and wanted to go into television, the obvious thing to do would be to look up all of the local tv stations…find the parallel type(s) of businesses for your field. Don’t forget nonprofits - often they are understaffed and interns get to build great portfolios/learn skills well beyond that is available at a more corporate environment (the downside being that you’ll probably get little pay, if any).
Definitely the career office will be your first step! Also in science/engineering majors, once you’ve got a couple of years under your belt, look into the NSF “Research Experiences for Undergraduates” programs. They are paid summer internships/fellowships at various universities. Applications are due in February/March, and can range from a resume and cover letter to several essays. They are generally geared toward students interested in graduate school and often include GRE prep and other programs. You can find them through your school’s career office, or just by Googling your major and “REU”.
However, at this point in the year, if you’re still looking for something for this summer, the career office will be your best bet.
