Responding to College Mailings

Does it make any difference if you respond to the mail you get in your junior year from various colleges? Do they track email or snail mail responses? Some schools are very aggressive such as U of Chicago, and I was wondering if you don't send back one or more of the dozens of postcards, doesn't that show lack of interest? Conversely, if you do write back, does that move you up in their estimation? Also, if not too off topic, does not going to their local meetings count against you (since they did ask for you to register, so do they keep track)?

some schools like to keep track of who's interested. in those schools, to to show as much interest as possible, though i wouldn't say that not going to their local meetings count against you. after all, interest alone is not enough.
