No LL but verbally committed and assured acceptance by coach. (M) Columbia H/W Crew

We have heard about 2 athletes who each have verballed to 2 different ivies for a mens sport…however neither got a LL…and both applied early.
Will be interesting to see how it plays out as all of the risk is on the athletes and non on the coach—
December will be telling…both kids have told everyone that they are “in” at these schools…
Admissions admits. Not the coaches.
Every year the athletic forums here at CC hear tales of woe. Hoping that this year there are many successes.

Have there been no NLI signings yet?

Fogfog, how could they have “verballed to 2 different ivies for a mens sport…however neither got a LL…and both applied early”? By apply early, I assume you mean either ED or SCEA. Aren’t HS counselors supposed to monitor and prevent multiple applications in violation of commitments (like ED and SCEA) made to colleges? I can see this as a serious problem for a school, as the last thing you’d want to do is to tick off any Ivy.

I believe fogfog is saying 2 different athletes have verballed, each to a different Ivy League school. I have my fingers crossed for both of these student-athletes, hoping for great news!

Any coach who pulled something like that would get a very rapid black eye (it has happened at one Ivy for a particular coach and now he is PNG at any prep school). Coaches have a symbiotic relationship with both high school coaches and college counsellors. So while the coaches don’t admit, ad coms do, any coach who is free and easy with verbals will find his or her career cut quite short. (He or she can do something like that to a “one-off” where the student is the only one ever to apply to the college and it isn’t anticipated that others will…but if the student comes from a major high school with a long-standing relationship with the college…whoa…)

Right
I meant each athlete (male) verballed to an ivy.
Each one applied ED. Neither got a LL (so far).
Of the two–one has the academics/ECs and stats to in all likelyhood, gain admittance on his own.
The other athlete doesn’t have a strong a resume.

I realize these aren’t my kids–I am just keeping fingers crossed because to be facing doing apps between Dec 15 and Jan 1 could be very difficult if things don’t go the way they hope. It is so sad when kids and families are in that position.

I agree Etondad, it can get ugly.
Coaches can say " I am supporting you at admissions" …yet that doesn’t mean the kid has a slot.

I was told that I have a slot, despite my lack of a letter. While this makes me nervous for sure, I trust that the coach will do what he says and help me in.

^Jon Douglas is a pretty honorable guy and so I’d take him it at his word. He must have more spots for H/W rowing than he had Likely Letters for and he’s got an agreement from the ADCOM on this. I assume you have very high SATs and excellent grades. There are a couple of strong rowers that he’s trying to get in with LLs in the RD round and may need to raise the Academic Index for them

If you could, share with us your academic scores, your erg times and your rowing experience. Also let us know when you got on the coaches radar and had your OV.

Thanks.

Don’t really feel like posting details. (Would like to stay anonymous) but my academics are a bit better than most people being recruited and my erg scores are a bit worse than most people being recruited. We will see on Thursday.

MontyP – Good luck and Congrats!! I have no idea who/where Mr. Douglas is as I am a female lightweight rower in my junior year, but I DO hope his word is solid. I know I’ll be on the edge next year at this time, so i am hoping you have great news to celebrate for the holidays!

Wow so friendly. Thank you very much!

BTW, I totally get why you wouldn’t want to post all that detailed info – our rowing world isn’t that huge and while i very much appreciate all the great advice/help in here, I really wouldn’t want exactly who I am figured out … well, perhaps not until all is said and done and i had the big happy written firm YES in hand, lol.

Again good luck! I’m already nervous about being in your shoes next year as I think I might be way too trusting of coaches’ words, so at some point, I’ll bet my parents will butt in (nicely!) to make sure I am not reading things wrong/overly positively. it’s just after all these years of rowing – yes even the 2Ks, the weekends away at freezing regattas, the lack of time for much of a social life (ha), – I adore the sport and can’t imagine not rowing Lwt or even OW in college (hopefully at an Ivy I humbly believe my grades/scores merit), so i hope it all works out!

Haha there really are a lot of future-Columbia rowers on this forum…

can any of the H/W Rowing guys for Columbia put up their academics?
