resumes with recommendations

Could someone explain why most students give their resumes to the teachers filling out recommendations for them?

I thought that the teachers recommendations would mostly focus on how they perceived you as a person, based on what they saw of you in their classes, in which case a resume would not provide much info.

I can understand if say you asked your math teacher for a recommendation, and your resume displayed a lot of math related activities that you did outside of school that your teacher did not know of (just to really drive in the point that you liked math, if you did not show that enough in math class), but other than that rather specific case, I can't think of many other good reasons for including a resume, which might actually lead the teachers to veer their comments off you and onto your accomplishments/ECs.

This link gives some nice general advice.
I think a cover letter thanking teachers for their help and mentioning highlights is always a good idea. Some teachers like to have a resume--one of my d's teachers requested one when she asked for a recommendation. It can't hurt I guess, but I tend to think a letter tailored to the teacher is more important.
