Retake the GRE?

Hi All,

I'm currently planning on applying for biomedical/life sciences grad school next year, although I'll be graduting this winter. I took the GRE General this January and got:

680 Verbal
690 Math

Not satisfied, I took the GRE General again today and got:

670 Math :(
750 Verbal (?!)

So my question is, considering that I'm applying for biomedical grad schools, are my GRE General scores from today sufficient enough that I don't need to take it again? It's a little weird for me, since I'm under the impression that for sciences my scores should be the other way around. I have not taken the GRE Bio subject test, and plan to do so on April 09.

Thanks for any help

I'd focus on the rest of your application. At this point, you're just confirming that your quant skills are mediocre (not bad, mind you, just not amazing; and your verbal was great on the second go around!) I don't think improving on the third go-around is really going to do much for you. If I were your adcom, I'd probably think it was a fluke (or, really, a matter of the testing effect) since the first two quants are almost identical. If the rest of your application is great, a 1420 combined will do you a lot of good and a 750 verbal is probably the 99th percentile, right? (quant...more like in the 60s?)

750 is insane for verbal. I don't know what you need for your programs in terms of quant score, you should talk to a prof and find out. If you are bellow the auto-reject line then you might need to, otherwise you are good.

Oh boy, got back the paper results today. Scores are the same(obviously), but found that on writing, improved by 1 whole point, 4.5 to 5.5

So I guess my question is still: should I go for it one last time to improve my quant section? Or stay put and concentrate on other stuff? I am trying to apply for life sciences PhD grad schools.

three roads,

any particular reason your verbal shot up? extra studying, not drinking the night before the test? haha jk.

if you did something special for the verbal, maybe it'll work for the quant section. i may be wrong, however.

Verbal can be all over the place. In practice tests I've gotten above 700 and below 600. Unlike the quant, luck plays a pretty big part. If you just happen to see words you know, or have a reading passage that is something you are interested in, you can shoot up, big time. And if on another day, the reading passage is something is about a subject that you hate or bores the hell out of you, you can drop like a rock.

At least that's how it works for me.

To "three roads": If you are scoring consistently higher in Quant on practice tests, then maybe consider retaking. But if you are still hitting near 670, then I see no point in doing it again.

Also, get Barron's GRE book. It is the best for math, hands down. If it improves your practice scores considerably, go for it.
