Reveal your ACHIEVEMENTS in an essay? Or your CHARACTER? It's a thin line

Hello everyone,

I recently finished writing my Common App essay. I personally thought I did what I needed to do quite well: Reveal WHO I AM in a piece of thoughtful, very unique, and "out-of-the-box" writing.

While I had several teachers and friends who reviewed my essay and loved it, my mom wasn't as impressed. She thought I should "BRAG" and talk about my achievements ("How come you didn't mention your club presidencies? Or that ___ award that you won last year?")

I personally feel that my applicaiton clearly has the awards and club leadership positions written on paper. In a very very subtle way, I briefly touched some achievements in my essay (just to appease my mom) ... but what does everyone think?

Essay's should be about revealing YOU. But when it comes to showing yourself off, how far should we go?

Don’t show yourself off. That stuff is already on your transcript. Just think how boring it would be for a reader to read a list of your achievements when it’s literally 6 inches away on your transcript. Stick with revealing who you are.

^^do not write another resume when you’re supposed to write about you…your passions, an example of who you are, etc.

So how does one create a “very unique, out-of-the-box writing” piece? Do share.

leave out of your essay all the **** that you can show on ur app
