Prompt: Do you think that ease does not challenge us and that we need adversity to help us discover who we are?

Essay:

Ease has always been vied for as an alternative to adversity. Most would rather take a road that would allow them to travel comfortably and not have to deal with unnecessary hardship, but the consequence of taking that road is the lack of challenge. Adversity forces people to challenge themselves, exceed their potentials and to truly discover who we are.

Consider the case of Indian freedom fighter and political leader, Mahatma Gandhi. Before Gandhi decided to lead a revolt against the British Imperialistic rule, the whole of India was its slave. It was forced to do whatever the British demanded of it. However, Gandhi, a lawyer educated in London, could not stand the way that the British rule committed its injustices on his people. Through his two main weapons, non-cooperation and peaceful resistance, he was able to face the adversity of the British army. By his strong determination and faith, he forced the English out of India and gained India complete political, spiritual and individual freedom. By making this impossible task possible, Mahatma Gandhi revealed to the world that adversity can even change a small, skinny man into the father of the nation only if he has strength and determination to fight through his hardships.

George Orwell’s novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, demonstrates a man’s fight with hardship, and his self discovery. Winston Smith works for the totalitarian regime of the Party who have him edit historical records to match the propaganda the Party enacts. With the meager food rations, the constant spying, and the monotony of life, Smith gets tired and frustrated with the Party, and plans to rebel against the government through an illicit, illegal love affair with a woman named Julia. The adversity placed upon Winston forces him to act and commit himself to unthinkable things, such as love, but that self-discovery, the fact that he can go against the Party allows him to be peaceful, for perhaps the first time in his life.

Evidently, in literature and in history, adversity does force one to be challenged but that challenge allows us self discovery. Through Gandhi’s persistence, he had granted India its independence from the British, while also discovering himself as a brilliant political leader. In Orwell’s, 1984, Winston was able to discover that there is more to him than what his government says there is. So although, and easy life may be the nice way to go, a challenging life help us truly advance.

Most people on here recommend that an essay contains 3 prime examples instead of 2.

^
I’ve always worked best with two examples. Usually the time does not permit the creation of three solid examples, so I just make two really good body paragraphs.

I would give this a 9 or a 10. The complexity of the vocabulary needs to be increased and the second body paragraph a bit more expanded. It is still a good essay.
