Doesn't change the fact that McCain economic plan is better than Obama's. :) McCain is not his predecessor, as much as it would please democrats if he was ;)!

I agree with Silvermoonlock about Dbate. This young man is painfully arrogant, self-absorbed and profoundly limited. I honestly don't have time to be on this thread but thought I would check in because this is a topic that I'm interested in and my daughter is now in her second year of college and I do feel I can hopefully be of help to parents who are going through the application process. Plus, I enjoy discussing our kids with other parents who can relate. However, when I read this first post by Dbate (it probably wasn't his first but the first one of his that I read) about how he wasn't going to date or marry a Black girl as if it would be their lost, I knew that this young man has serious issues. First of all, high achieving Black girls and women FAR exceed the number of high achieving Black boys and men. So, if Dbate can't find one, he obviously isn't looking for one. But, from everything he has said, I honestly can't imagine him appealing to any Black young women that I know. He seems like one of these "talented" black boys who has been made to feel that he is so exceptional (not like OTHER black people). He is so full of himself that it's pathetic. This young man proudly stated that he believes Palin is qualified to be VP because she's a hunter, a Christian and a mother!!! Then, he goes on to say he gets much of his information from Fox News, which is obvious by the comments that he makes. He is so young, so uninformed, and so incredibly sad. I can't dialogue with this young man. I've been a college professor for nearly 30 years. I know so many brillant, socially conscious and humble Black students, they would put this silly young boy to shame.

Awww c'mon. He's just a kid. I do not wish anything bad for him, but I am sure he will have many ...ahem... opportunities for enlightenment.

P.S. Thanks tututaxi, if you can find it!

Shrinkrap...When I read his posts, I see visions of Clarence Thomas : (

Anyway, the kid is adjusting just fine. The calls are down to once a week, if that. Texting during down times and responding to the e-mails when she gets to it. BTW the dog went on a hunger strike for about 5 days after she left lol

I do to. But he is young, give him time. When life throws him some real curves, we'll talk later.

So because I am a conservative I am somehow not black? Really? Here's a tip, why don't you refute my claims about Palin or McCain or even my stance on socialism?

You did not do those things that someone would expect an adult to do. If you can not argue against someone's claims, then attack them? That is not very mature.

Earlier I did a syollogism on why this does not make sense. And btw, girls out perform boys of all races (including Asian girls to Asian guys, White girls to white guys, and Black girls to Black guys).

What about my posts are uniformed? Or do you mean to say that I am not liberal? Really not being able to engage in discourse about differing opinions without stooping to attacking someone is sad.

Believe it or not Black people (gasp) can actually be Republican. I am not misinformed I have formulated my opinions premised on what I believe in and that is private ownership, individual responsibility, and morality.

As a Debater and person who literally competes in competitions where I have to give speeches on the political, social, and economic issues affecting our nation I am very aware. I am a avid reader of TIME and Newsweek, watch C-SPAN (for only a while, because sometimes it gets boring), and keep up to date with all the politics of our time.

For example over time watching the candidates during the primaries I began to notice certain habits they had. Hillary would do a routine that was:clap, clap, point, point, when addressing a large crowd.
Obama in debates would look down and tilt his head to the side and then look up into the eyes of the person he was talking to.
McCain constantly used the term "my friends".
Romney would attack McCain for not being conservative enough and then go on to talk about running the Olympics (which I never figured out how that qualified you to be president).
John Edwards was really pressed out of the news, but I remember him on the cover of like Rolling Stones or something with the cover: Can a white man still be president?
Guiliani in the words of Biden would say "a word, a noun, and 9/11"
Huckabee spoke about GOD, which I really liked, but I did not think that he was center enough to win.

So contrary to the conceptions that some may have, I am very informed about politics. I was even invited to the inauguration of president bush (through a leadership program, some of you all's children probably were invited as well).

May I ask why you are a democrat I suppose?

I hope we get to the day in this country were people realize that your skin color does not dictate your political position.

***On a side note, this is my first time getting to vote so I have tried to make my self very informed and I am excited to get to vote for John S. McCain :)!

I am going to law school, but I do not want to be a judge. I may run for political office, but it is unlikely I would win, because many people will not vote for a black republican. But I may get a sweet appointed position.

tl;dr translation...too long didn't read. Not sure why you feel the need to defend yourself so tightly. Are you trying convince the readers of the board or yourself?

I don't understand why you are wasting your time on a message board, rather than being with friends, peers, acquaintances and some young women of which ever flavor you want. (People your own age)

Are you in school? Is this a free period? Something's not right.

Okay :(. But honestly if you do not read or listen to the other side you cannot engage in any type of discourse.

No i live in the suburbs of Houston and we evacuated for the hurricane, so right now i am in austin because parts of Houston do not have electricity.

Can we move back to discussing college issues. I think we've indulged Dbate enough. Do any of you have kids who have done a study abroad program? My daughter is beginning to look at programs for next year and I'm curious where your kids have gone.

I agree with Impw. Enough of the debate with Dbate.

Yes, my child currently is participating in a study abroad program in Spain. She will be taking courses in Spanish and will work on improving her Spanish skills. She's only recently arrived in Spain, so I can't give you a lot of feedback at this point, but she's thrilled to be there.

As a fellow young black student, I find the disrespect Dbate is receiving because of his political views amazing. I disagree with many of his views, but I don't see the need for parents of all people to call someone "self-absorbed" and "limited". It is condescending and actually, makes you seem "limited". I guess in this world tolerance doesn't apply to politics. I think parents who want their kids to have a better understanding of the world should set an example by being more tolerant and not resort to personal attacks.

Marnimom, I met a very impressive Black female student from Duke who spent her year in Madrid last year. I think it was a Duke program. She enjoyed it as well.

misralz, it's not because of his views. I know many Black republicans so it's a fallacy to say this is why he's being "disrespected". If the shoe fits... I have nothing but tolerance for people who are informed. But, Dbate is basically touting his own horn and trying desperately to impress us by telling us his credentials. He has a right to his opinions but don't use Fox news as your primary source and ridiculous reasonings (hunter, mom, christian) for supporting someone. It just doesn't reflect the thinking of a well educated and thoughtful person. His arguements sounds like those from people who are very limited in their exposure, reading and education.

From my perspective, Dbate is on the wrong forum. This is one of the threads on the parent's forum. If he wants to continue debating the issue of McCain/Palin's qualifications, his lack of interest in dating black women, nothing precludes him from starting another thread in another section of CC.

Okay, lets stop saying "dating Black woman" so we can lose the "AfroRomance" ad at the top! Glad to hear about the Duke Madrid program. My D is thinking of starting a new langrage so she can go to Italy....

I said I watch fox news. What are you talking about using it for a primary source?

I came on the parent's forum because usually parents are more informed and knowledgable than the other people who are college applicants.
I started out asking about dating dynamics, not a lack of interest in dating black women.
The poitical discussion actually started because I just saying I was a conservative and then people started bashing me for that.

D is also wants to go abroad. I've been concerned about how black students are treated abroad. Do the students stay primarily with their American student groups? What have black student experiences been with home-stays?

Any insights or info?

^^^I did not travel abroad but from what I hear people are nice. But don't be vocal about being an american and also try to speak their language because ppl get offended you speak english to them as if they should know. Someone I know went to Spain for a spanish thing over the summer and my spanish teacher commented to watch out for pick pockets in Spain.

yes, what's up with that interracial AfroRomance dating ad that I saw earlier this morning. Are we a targeted group or can we blame this on Dbate??? (just kidding)
