My D has been accepted ED and is wading through all the entrance forms and came across an option to apply for one of several "Learning Communities" she is interested in possibly participating in the Environmental Science LC.

Can any Rhodes student(s) or parent(s) shed some light on the advantage/disadvantage of participating in one of the Learning Communities?

I live in the Biology Learning Community. Honestly, it's not very different from any other dorm. It is kind of nice because there are a lot of people taking biology living nearby. And the Biology tutors come to this dorm for tutoring so it's not a very far walk. Other than that, it's just a typical dorm.

Will there be a Biology Living Community next year? D just got the acceptance letter today so she did not get a list yet.

GilmoreGrey for the reply and information.

To Rachacha - I don't see one for Biology in 2009 - only Environmental Studies, Search Humanities, Life Humanities, American Studies, British Empire and Art.

Hi all! I didn't live in a learning community during my time here but all of my friends that have lived or are living in one highly recommend it! As mentioned earlier, it is just like any other dorm except that you are grouped with students with similar academic interests. Many cited that this is beneficial because of the "positive peer pressure" that comes from students attending the same classes and motivating each other to attend classes, prepare for class and exams, and to be actively involved in academic discussions outside of the classroom. It sounds like a great experience--let me know what your daughter decides to do!

PS The learning community categories do change from year to year. I have heard that the enviornmental science one is increasing in popularity, although traditionally the British Empire one is the oldest. If I were entering a learning community I would be drawn towards the Search/Life one since it is an experience that you share with all first year students and is fundamental to an education at Rhodes. Best wishes to your daughter!

Koveracre,

Thanks for the input - D has decided to apply for the learning community and can't wait to start Rhodes.
