So disappointed rejected. 1590 SAT and 4.0 gpa but no research on resume. During this Covid time how did one get research opportunities? Just curious

What is the ā€œRice Investment Grantā€? Is that a scholarship, or a need-based financial aid?

I donā€™t think research experience is necessary. I just think itā€™s a small school trying to build a diverse class. My daughter is a senior at Rice and she and most of her friends did not have research experience coming in.

An admissions person at another school once told me that I should look at the process as though admissions is creating a football team. You might be a great quarterback, but if they already have a quarterback, you mght not get accepted even though you are certainly qualified. Last year they only admitted about 2200 students during regular decision. Thatā€™s not a lot when they are trying to build a well rounded class.

Pretty sure you donā€™t have to pay that grant back. The Rice investment is to make sure people arenā€™t in debt to attend. (Theoretically)
At least thatā€™s what I THINK!
Mine was accepted!! :partying_face::heart: :owl:
Going to be a difficult choice now

Also didnā€™t have a withdraw button, so I think that was irrelevant.

Ah, well. Waitlisted. DD just got home from her spring sport to check her portal. Not gonna lie - it was VERY sad news, but sheā€™s already showering and going back to the high school for an evening event. Life goes on, as it must.

If itā€™s helpful, she did NOT have the withdraw button as of today (perhaps earlier, but I didnā€™t check until today).

I never checked any links (posted here earlier) as I was afraid lol!

I posted upthread about our FAFSA verification saga. She did not have the Identity Verification form in her portal.

She received emails from Rice following her RD application. The last one was ā€œRice Loves Huston,ā€ I think.

Iā€™m sure portal and email things will change next year, but Iā€™m leaving this here for posterity - just in case it helps someone in the future.

Hearty congrats to those accepted! Rice is an amazing institution, as we all know. Each of you accepted students will do great things there.

RIce does not do loans as part of their financial aid. Rice Investment is need-based aid.

Iā€™ve been asking the same question! How did so many kiddos have research opportunities during a global pandemic?! The universities and hospitals/labs near us were not allowing student access.

Agreed. Both of my children were accepted to Rice, and neither had research experience.

I am thinking the same thing too - private universities seem to look for research /competitions such as ISEF, regeneron in addition to perfect grades/ scores and decent extra curriculars. Cannot find another way to understand this. My applicant has perfect grades 12 APs, 1570, very decent extra curriculars and competitive summer internship. The only thing missing is published papers (peer-reviewed / first author type) and competitions.

Accepted with a $100k scholarship! Applied test optional, so didnā€™t think it was possible. Super excited!
