I'm kindof surprised that Rice doesn't already have a thread like this. I was thinking this could be a place for all this year's applicants to discuss the application process and post results when the time comes.

I think you are just very excited :-).

I definitely am. Rice is my dream school. I’m actually consciously trying to not get too carried away so my impending rejection doesn’t crush me that much.

I’m applying. It’s my only serious out-of-state application at the moment so yeah :P

I might be applying. At least it’s one of the many reach schools I am debating about since I’m limiting the number of reach schools.

Anyone start the Rice Common App Supplement yet?

@quidditchcat - Hey, you do know that Rice has a Quidditch team don’t you?

Planning to apply ED!!! Do any of you know what areas Rice focuses on on your transcript? I have a good GPA, good class rank, out-of-state (NM), decent ECs but my ACT/SATs are low Any chance??

Jhsu320, I would probably need to know more details in order to chance you. But if your SAT is over 2000, you should have a chance in my opinion. It would take a score under that to derail an otherwise perfect application. Tests are important but they arent everything

Rice is making a presentation at my HS today!!! I will post details

Rice threads seem to be very quiet haha

Am I the only one that is completely stuck on the Supplement essay? The long one. This has got to be the hardest prompt I have in all my applications…

I think it’d be cool if everyone on here would say where they’re from and whether they’re applying ED or RD just to see how diverse this select group of the applicant pool will be.

I’ve lived in Chicago for the majority of my life, but I’m moving to Pearland after I graduate HS, regardless of where I go for school. I used to live in Houston when I was just a wee lad. And I’m applying ED!!!

I’m a native Minnesotan! Sort of stumbled across Rice, few people have heard of it around here. I decided against visiting during the summer (Minnesotan summers are hot enough!) but I did attend a Rice info session in my area. I’m planning on applying RD because my FA doesn’t look too promising…hopefully it will work out though. I will probably visit in spring before decisions come out to escape our winter! Seems like a wonderful school on paper, I can’t wait! Got an application fee waiver in the mail from my AP scores, so that makes me even more excited.

I’ve been relatively active around the Rice Threads. I have been absolutely obsessed with going to Rice for the past year. I am hispanic, have normal SAT and ECs for Rice’s standards. But a slightly lower GPA than I would like (3.6 - class rank: 13/427). I am applying RD for a few reasons. First of all, my FA situation is not looking too good. Secondly, I still need to retake my SAT one more time. I want to visit to “show interest” and to look at the campus but I don’t want to waste money when I know I could quite possibly (and probably) get rejected.

That’s a great idea! I’ll start a form and add more if you’d like. :)

Applying ED or RD? ED
You are from? New Jersey
Major: Architecture

Applying ED or RD? RD…ED scares me haha.
You are from? Texas!..Houston actually lol
Major: CogSci/Bio annnd pretty excited about the new Neuro minor!

For the supplement essay: I suggest not thinking too hard. “Perspectives” can mean anything you want it to! Doesn’t necessarily have to be about culture.

Hey can you guys answer my question. So if we are accepted for ED, what if we don’t have the income to afford it? I honestly don’t understand what Rice means by withdrawing other apps unless still finding out whether financial aid has been accepted. Please answer

I’m apply ED from Houston! Rice is highly regarded here but often overlooked or dismissed as a “nerd” school lol. I didn’t seriously consider applying until I visited, the atmosphere is so great!
Major: undecided?

Your question is a little unclear. When you apply ED (Early Decision - binding) and not EA (Early Acceptance - not binding), you apply only to one school (public/state schools excluded) and you agree to attend that school if accepted. In general, you don’t apply if your finances are in question and you need to see offers from other schools before making a decision. Rice’s FA is very good, but run their “cost calculator” and expect that to be about what you get (unless you have very strange circumstance). If you cannot afford that, do not apply ED (to any school that you cannot afford). Apply for RD to several schools and then compare your financial aid offers.
