Rice Econ Program

Hi. I am thinking about majoring in economics at Rice. Is the econ program good here or do I have to double major in something like engineering for me not to look bad? I've never seen the econ program being highly regarded here.

bump. Id like to know as well.

Econ is a very popular major at Rice. Check out the economics website at [Rice University Department of Economics](http://economics.rice.edu/). There are two majors with economics: econ and math/econ. Of course, you can double major if you want.

You should also check out the Baker Institute. The Baker Institute is very highly regarded on campus. The Department of Economics is actually in the Baker Institute building. Check out their website as well: [James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy Rice University](http://www.bakerinstitute.org/).

I’m currently taking Econ 201 (Microeconomics I). It’s a pretty popular class. There are 3 sections of the class, each of which is about 115 students.

but that still doesn’t answer my question directly…

As a freshman who is majoring in engineering, I will tell you that majoring in econ doesn’t make someone “look bad.” Majoring in english doesn’t make someone “look bad.” Majoring in ancient mediterranean civilizations doesn’t make someone “look bad.”

Differences in relative work loads from one major to the next become apparent from time to time, but everyone here works hard to succeed in a field of study that they are passionate about. When selecting a major, you needn’t worry about what others may or may not think of you; worry about finding something that truly interests you. If econ is what interests you, then go with econ! :)

Junior here that took some econ classes- the professors are pretty good for the most part, and the workload is reasonably challenging. And don’t worry about “looking bad” just because you are majoring in one thing or another, just pursue your interests. Besides, you really really don’t want to pick up an engineering major just to avoid looking bad. It’s a really silly thing to worry about.

I would recommend Math Econ. From what I have seen, it is better in terms of getting a job after college.
