Rice Essay advice

"The quality of Rice's academic life and the Residential College System are heavily influenced by the unique life experiences and cultural traditions each student brings. What perspective do you feel that you will contribute to life at Rice? (Most applicants are able to respond successfully in two to three double-spaced pages.)"

A student that I am mentoring has given me her essay to read, and it is entirely about a school activity that she is devoted to.....I don't want to give her the wrong advice, but what would you say the essay is asking for?

You can dig up a lot of old threads that discuss this in more detail, but essentially “what makes you, you?” Rice wants students who will add to the diversity of the school (with different passions, perspectives, background, talents, etc.) That’s what the essay should focus on.

As blackeyedsusan said, it is about you and your perspective. The activity is less relevant than your contribution, feelings, reason for choice, influencing factors etc. Make the essay as personal as possible.
