Rice for Business/Econ?

What's the reputation? Is Rice a target school for big bulge-bracket firms like Goldman Sachs, JPM, UBS, LEH, Credit Suisse, etc.? Do recruiters come on campus to hold interviews?

THANKS!

I remember someone saying that econ majors were the highest paid Rice graduates right after graduation, but I may be completely off. I'm sure Rice is a target school for pretty much any major it offers... they kick a-- at everything.

JPM and Goldman were both at the career fair earlier this semester, along with Deutsche Bank. UBS has taken out advertisements to recruit people in the campus paper, and I've known several people who've interviewed with Merrill Lynch on campus. Rice isn't as well known, but the recruiting departments of large banks (make that large institutions of any source that try to hire lots of really talented people) know about Rice and respect it.

Rice doesn't really have an undergraduate business program - they just introduced a minor, but you definitely won't majoring in business ..... which is much better in my opinion.

i've checked rice graduation surveys... some (20-30%) of econ majors and math econ analysis majors go on to work as ibankers with said firms. i dont think that rice econ majors are highest paid tho, i mean chem e and ee will make in the upper 50K range, econ majors will on average make in upper 40K to lower 50K range. that said, my ac dec sponsors son went to rice, majored in econ and government and is very rich and is one of rice's major donors. you dont REALLY need a business undergrad degree to do some of the things they can do, econ is a good major to do and they have plenty of great and lucrative job opps.

I know of two Rice Engineering seniors who have been offered $80,000+ in starting salaries for next year. Outrageous, I know!!!! My D's friend is a recent Rice econ graduate making 60,000+. On another topic altogether; The Rice graduation surveys are taken right BEFORE graduation - so the results are low in the number of students with jobs, etc. (I think it would be interesting to see a survey of grads a few years out.) I know my DD is not planning to head straight into a traditional job, so her starting salary may be small.

Anxiousmom: Out of curiosity, do you know the majors of those two engineering seniors?

One is ChemE, the other is either EE or MechE - can't remember which.

Interestingly enough, though, the average starting salaries for ChemE and EE are pretty average, based on the Graduation survey.

Here's a novel idea: major in something you like and will thus do well in. Then you'll get a better job because you'll actually make good grades from liking what you're doing!

why would anyone do that jk

And all the asian (not trying to be racist, other ethnicities do it too but asian is the stereotype) parents who brainwash their kids to become doctors read your post and go "Nonsense!"
