I have my Rice interview coming up very shortly. How far do I insist on paying for my own coffee?

And, what are some "out of the box" questions that people have received during theirs? Obviously these won't apply directly to mine, but just to help me get the creativity going.

If not from Texas, be ready to be held to a slightly higher standard when it comes to knowing about the university and being able to talk about why you want to go to Rice.

I knew about Rice, and just had a good conversation with my interviewer. One thing that cannot be understated–don’t appear to know things you don’t. There is almost nothing worse. I am admittadly not very well read, and had not read a book (some classic that is lost to my memory) that my interviewer brought up. This didn’t make him think any less of me. In fact, we had a fantastic conversation, and still talk. To top it all off, he and his wife were in the same College I am sitting on the 6th floor of as I type this message, some 30 years prior to my own Matriculation.

Be yourself. These things have a way of working out :)

Agreed. Do not try to act like some you aren’t. Just be relaxed and let them get to know YOU and put a face to your application. Use the time to get to know about Rice as well. They are interviewing you as much as you are interviewing the school (through them)

As for paying, make a mention of it. See where it goes. Do not force it on them but be polite and offer as well. They may insist, in which case you let them pay or they may let you. Just roll with it.

I had mine today! My interviewer bought me lunch (I tried to pay, but she insisted). It was a great hour long conversation. It felt much more like a conversation with a friend. None of those quirky interview questions. Now I wish I had asked her what she put in her ‘box’. It’s the last thing left for me to do…
