I'm assuming that interviews at Rice are not unlike interviews at any other university, but are there any weird or off-beat questions that an interviewer asked you? Has anyone interviewed with an admissions staff member?

I'm wondering the same thing - I need to schedule an interview as well.

I hope they don't ask questions involving politics. ><

My interviewer didn't ask me anything controversial. Just what I do and want to do in life and why.

Oh man. Do they expect a blunt answer?

If I were asked that question, I would just say I would want to pursue a career in surgery because I have an unusual obsession with flesh-like substances. I also have remarkable hand-eye coordination; I realized I had a knack for doing sutures when my class and I were doing cat dissections. It's probably why I take such an interest in sushi. :o

I think that's a weird answer, maybe kind of gross. But it is heart-felt, and anything else would be a deviation from the truth. Is that what they're looking for? or are they looking for an answer that isn't as well, odd?

Nah, they seemed kinda pointless. I was sick when I had mine, and I didn't do a good job and it did seem to affect anything. The only memorable thing she said was "Wow, look at those test scores."

Well, Iterant, that response would be better than the blunt reasons most people who want to be surgeons give - money. Haha.

Haha, I hope so. No amount of money could possibly convince me to spend the best years of my life with my nose in a book (don't shoot me!).

Though, I really doubt people scream "MONEY, GOSH!" when their interviewer asks them why they want to do surgery. Oh, I'm also thinking "I want to help people" is also a generic response. ><

Still, I think my response would be enough to drive away most people. I think they'd eyeball me for a few seconds before writing down "denied" on their clipboard. ^_^

I thought your response would be awesome and hilarious. I can't wait until my interview. It's really the only way that the admissions board really will get to know ME and not my stats.
