im not sure about which one is better for me. i am going into the field of business and i have heard that rice's economics major isn't very good and ut's undergrad business is also rated in the top 15.one other factor is that i may have a scholarship to rice but not ut.

I've always believed that you should pick a school for every reason other than the strength of the department in which you want to major. The odds are very good that you will graduate with a different major than you started with. To me, the degree that I will get from Rice is just a piece of paper that says "Bachelor of Arts," and your four years at college are about so much more than just earning that piece of paper.

UT BHP is great, but its such a hugely inflated track in terms of GPA (only As and Bs are given out, rarely are Cs given). Rice econ may not be its marquee department, but the Rice name will carry you far, assuming you wish to apply for graduate school in business at some point in your work career. Check out the career center website at careers.rice.edu, and you'll see that Rice econ/math econ majors attract great employers and great salaries.

Follow the money, especially if you plan on going to grad school for business. I'd say Rice for undergrad if you get the scholarship, because UT for grad school is golden.

Rice and UT are pretty much on par academically...as someone above said, department ratings are bs. Go where you think you'll be more happy.

silentsailor how can you say rice and UT are on par academically?

UT's a strong public university. Rice is a strong private university. The classes I've sat in on at UT aren't, as far as I can tell, any different from those at Rice. UT has a particularly strong reputation in business and that's worth considering. Once you get to a certain point, it's hard to say that one university teaches better than another...plus if he's up for scholarship consideration at Rice he's probably a shoe-in for one of the honors colleges.

ut's plan 2 honors program is great in my opinion, though not at rice's level.

plan 2 is awesome

Lol...Plan II spat out Kinky Friedman and is therefore awesome. Nuff said.

I have attended both Rice and UT, and from my perspective, go to which ever one is cheaper (especially if the price difference in significant). If that's not an issue, I would look at some other factors.

BHP is great for landing basically any finance job that an undergrad can get. If you do accounting/BHP, you'll be in great shape because you'll basically be at the highest honors program in the top accounting school. Also, the UT network is a lot bigger, but both names will carry you far in Texas.

Rice offers a better undergraduate experience. There are still lots of parties (if you're into that), so you're not missing out on anything too much compared to UT, except maybe the football atmosphere. Rice is also more personalized in terms of getting to know your professors, and basically letting you take the classes that interest you.
