Rice or WashU for math?

I am a college student looking to transfer and have gotten into Rice and University of Washington in St.Louis. I intend to major in math. Where should I go?

Both are great institutions, and their math departments have similar rankings (that’s for graduate school, but it still gives a sense of the reputation of the department). Rice is listed at #28 and Wash U at #39 (and as these kinds of rankings are not particularly precise, that makes them basically equivalent.) I am not personally familiar with either of their math departments, so you should look at the number and level of courses they offer carefully, but it certainly looks like this is a choice where you can feel confident you will get a very fine education both generally and in your major at either school.

I would much, much rather be in Houston than St. Louis. Rice has a fantastic math program and is one of the happiest colleges in the US. I would go with Rice.
Where are you transferring from?

Both schools have good programs. Rice’s courses (based on their department website and WashU’s department website) are probably slightly better but I think WashU’s program is good too. It’s down to personal preference. Where do you want to go/where can you afford?
